It installed without a hitch by following the simple instructions. It is working reliably. And I operate it with a Macintosh, Safari.

After a hassle with Hawking over A RMA for a bad router, I decided to purchase the Netgear. It installed very easy and quick. I was and still am very happy. It has more range tha any of the previous Routers I have used including Linksys and Hawking.

    Faulty manufacturing, November 7, 2006
By R. Singh (Tulsa, OK)
My experience was similar to several of the other reviews on this site. My router did not overheat; but within a month, I could not even power it on. Jiggling the power cord connection on the router side would intermittently power it on (as long as I kept fiddling with it)! Customer service was outsourced to India and was horrible in every aspect even when I did manage to get through to someone. Their warranty policy required me to pay for shipping and included some mail delay times, so I decided to junk this router and go with a Belkin like some of the network guys had suggested in their reviews. My Belkin has been flawless so far and it provides much greater flexibility in setting up my wireless network and security settings. Save yourself a lot of heartache and stay away from this product. It appears the WGR614 suffers from some basic manufacturing flaw that Netgear needs to address. It looks good but it doesn't work very well.

Product worked fine right out of the box. Netgear web site was extremely helpful in setup. No problems with product to date. Netgear rebate process is quite another thing. They indicate rebate submission was never received and have NOT acknowledged repeated attempts to contact. Technical service is quite good but very poor customer service.

The Netgear WGR614 was very easy to set up. Took approximately 20 minutes and ran perfectly with my Motorola broadband modem. The Linksys wireless router that I was using previously, was nothing but trouble. Finally ripped it out and replaced with this Netgear. Well worth it!

I required a fairly extensive session with a nice Indian tech supporter to change the IP addresses and properly install this router. My PC is run-of-the-mill, nothing special, but the setup instructions are inadequate to the task. Once set up, the router works great, stays out of the way, has great range all over both floors of my house, no problems.

Inferior product. Appalling customer support., October 25, 2006

Within the first month I noticed that the router was intermittently dropping both wired and wireless connections. During these connection drops the router could not be accessed at all. "Ping" commands to the router's IP address were timing out. This indicates a failure either with the firmware or hardware.

I submitted an online support request to Netgear, waited a week, and received no response. I submitted another support request, and again was ignored. The third time, I sent a message saying their support was useless, and they deleted my online registration.

I can forgive problems with a product, but with such a lack of respect for customers, I think Netgear is a company to avoid.

Works for us., October 24, 2006

We are three roommates and share a single internet connection. The setup was a breeze and I could enable encryption easily. The signal is "excellent" everywhere in the house and we have used to watch streaming video, download files in a zippy and stay constantly connected to our VPN. One of those put on and forget about it products that make your life so much easier.

After a parade of 2 Linksys and 2 D-Link routers dying on me, I decided to try a Netgear.

Auto setup worked well, and I was able to get connected. Wow, maybe this time it would be different!

Nope... I connected at 54 mbps and within 30 seconds it was down to 1 mbps. Yup, that's right, 1 mbps. I tried reseting everything, but to no avail. It never came back up past 18 mbps, arrrrrgggghhhh...

Now, you may be thinking it's a cable modem problem. Nope, the connection flies when hooked directly to the modem. I wish you all good luck when searching for a consumer wireless router.

I've had this router for about 10 months. This wireless router consistently drops internet connection. Now it doesn't even connect to the internet. It cannot renew IP address or do anything outside the router. I do not recommend this product at all...

great functionality at a great price..., October 15, 2006

I switched to this router after having the worst experience with a Linksys WAG54G Router/Modem combo device. Not only does the Netgear router have a modern design that looks good anywhere in the home, it was easy to configure and set up. More importantly, I did not experience the frequent disconnection of the wireless signal between my laptop and the router (which was a common occurence with my previous Linksys router).

Overall, very happy with the performance of this device and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a reliable wireless router for the home.

No good for video streaming., October 7, 2006
By Anda (SF Bay, USA)
I brought this router 6 months back. I felt that it was good enough as i mainly used to browse the web. Once I started playing the video clips (mainly WMV9) off the net then I felt the pain. You just cannot play high quality video clips (not too high bitrate just the 386kbps clips) with this router. If I connect directly to the cable i can play those clips file.

I learned that these routes are cheap un-optimized linux running on them which makes them medriocre products.

Now i am shopping again for some better tuned routers (pref non-linux based embedded OS).

Second Netgear router I have had the misfortune to own.

The first wasn't compatible with XP, and after months of struggle, it went into the garbage can.

This router worked much better, setup was relatively easy, and then it died after 8 months of use.

The LAN (wired) ports never worked correctly, and if I used the modem directly, there was not a problem, so it was clearly the router.

Technical support is painful at best. At times I just hung-up to get another tech.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for, and cheap is cheap.

I just got cable internet and I wanted to be able to connect to the internet with my laptop from any room in my house. I'm not a very tech savvy person so I was surprised at how easy this router was to setup. I had my wireless network up and running in about 20 minutes. The instructions were easy follow and so far I haven't had any issues with connectivity. If you are looking for a simple router that is easy to setup, I would recommend this one.

This router Sucks!, September 17, 2006

I bought this router from Fry's Electronics for almost $100. I constantly have to reboot it and sometimes it goes striaght to netgears home page for no reason. Until recently when it stopped working all together! I didn't even have it for 6 months! I would not reccommend this router for anyone who uses a wireless connection a lot.

    Inconsistent Performance, September 14, 2006
By A. W. Moore (Boston, MA)
This would be a great router, if it worked consistently. I find that it drops wireless connections (as others have mentioned) and hard-locks when it overheats (about once every week). What's truly maddening, however, is that it doesn't work right using the WIRED connection! With both Verizon DSL and Comcast cable modem service, it chokes and drops the connection whenever I try to go to a webpage that has a large number of images. If I plug directly into the modem, all the problems go away. I believe the problem is that the circuitry can't handle a large number of connections to different servers at one time -- like facebook's set of image servers.

Either way, I would NOT recommend purchasing this router. I have had much better luck with Linksys.

    Great Router....ONLY if you're using Window$., September 8, 2006

I have 2 apple computers, one desktop and one laptop, and I HAD a separate desktop that ran Fedora. This router forced me to wipe fedora and install Windoze XP(ensive), and I have to have the XP computer on CONSTANTLY just to use the wireless on my macs. No mac software included or supported.
