Fantastic for the price!!!, September 3, 2005
By user
This router has so far been great, and at the price, it can't be beat!
Installation was a little annoying due to lack of clear instructions, requiring that you leave your existing setup intact until halfway through the setup. There were no instructions about adding a wired ethernet computer to the network, so you have to just plug it in and it works.
One other thing is the SPI firewall. It slowed my cable internet from a 5.0MBps to a 2.5MBps connection. After fiddling with the router settings, I found the problem and had to disable it. So, if you get this router, make sure to install firewall software on all of your networked computers.
Because of the firewall and installation annoyances, I can only give this router 4 stars. Other than that, this equipment has been working great!
(I have 2 wired Dell computers, one with Windows ME and one with Windows XP SP2, as well as Netgear WGR614 version 6, Netgear FA311 PCI Ethernet adapater, and Intel PRO network adapter).

Completely Died on My Folks, September 2, 2005
By user (VA)
I bought this router for my parents earlier this year and have had problems ever since. For whatever reason, it suffers from major connectivity problems - especially when you enable encryption. I frequently found myself on the phone giving tech support to my parents. The solution was almost always the same: reboot the router.

Then one evening, the router completely died. It no longer broadcast a wireless signal. Total piece of junk. Go with D-Link, or alternatively Linksys, and avoid Netgear.

No customer serivice, you need to pay, September 2, 2005

I have used for several months, and it doesn't support XP service pack2. Download driver didn't work. You have to pay for the tech support. I won't buy NETGEAR product again.

works great when you make it work, September 1, 2005
By user (New York)
Expecting the device to work "of the box" I plugged it in expecting some result. Apparently the installation is relatively tricky and somewhat lengthy, requiring existing internet, before making the router working. I installed in in "wired" mode with my desktop first. That required 2 hours customer support, which I found very helpful and prompt. We almost gave up, then switched cables PC-to-router with router-modem. One of which (blue) came in box and another I found in old computer pile.
To make it short - after install with desktop it works for about three weeks now without any problem with my wireless laptop.

Overheats if you use more than 2 ports, August 28, 2005

This product has a big problem with overheating. I solved it for a while by switching out the power supply for a lower voltage (I know, it surprised me that this worked too). At any rate, it worked great for the first 90 days or so, but it's not a good long term investment.

Great performance and reliability at a good price, August 27, 2005

I have owned a WGR614v5 for the past 8 months. It has worked flawlessly. It takes only seconds to setup. It does what any piece of network equipment should do - it works and you do not have to think "I wonder if my wireless is going to work." If I have any problems, I troubleshoot my computers and not the router. I use WPA and unlike some other access points that slow down after time, this one has never had issues (though I only have two devices connected most of the time) I would definitely purchase the same model again.

Great little gadget!, August 26, 2005

Really great gadget. I can actually use my laptop (wireless) while my wife is working on our PC. Stops all the "Are you using the computer tonight" questions. It truly is time savings for me since I don't have to wait to use the computer.

review of Netgear router, August 21, 2005

I am not a techie - easy to install. Fast, works well, set up straightforward, not a problem and am using right now with ease. Can't understand the low price for this level of quality.

Tripped up on installation, August 16, 2005
By user (Forest Hills, NY United States)
I think the WGR614 is a solid product. I've had it for 2 weeks and I am very glad I picked the netgear router to upgrade to wireless.

Pros:
- the signal is consistently excellent.
- compact. using the supplied stand to set the router up vertically and it doesn't take up much space at all.
- good price compare to other leading brands.
- pleasing white finish.
- setup is easy but...

Con:
- The wizard could have offer more detailed explaination when the connection failed. The trouble shooting tips are quite useless so I ended up toggling each of the setup options one by one to find out I needed to pass the MAC of my PC to the modem, something that I never had to worry about with my old SMC router. This is minor tho, I am sure the toll-free support would have pinpoint the problem easily.

Dependable as always, August 13, 2005

This was easy to install and I connected to it within a few minutes. As long as you follow the instructions and install the software first before connecting the router, you'll have no trouble. Several co-workers have purchased this same item and all have found it easy to set up and use.

Good product but dificult setup, August 9, 2005

Good product and excellent vendor. Setup is some what complicated and time taking. Netgear support is very good and they are available 24x7.

I suggest this is a great product overall.

I've had this router for awhilie now, switched from the Linksys BEFSR41 because it died. In terms of reliability and stability, this works fine (I have the v4). It's easy to setup for basic connectivity, but port forwarding doesn't work on it. So the only for me to use certain applications I had to enable DMZ hosting, which I didn't have to on my Linksys. Also, once we got this router I noticed a significant drop in bandwidth which I account for the router not my ISP. Either way, if you're not a user that demands port forwarding, like a gamer, then get this router. Otherwise Linksys are way better.

Easy Setup, Thus Far Flawless, August 8, 2005
By user (San Francisco, CA United States)
I've owned this for a week so far, so maybe my 5-star rating is too early to tell. But I was a little scared buying this router after reading all the negative reviews.

It was real easy to setup this router and to set the WEP security. I do have fairly good knowledge of PC's and stuff, so that helped. So far, no dropped signals on either of my two laptops and I'm surfing all day including streaming Yahoo's music videos.

I cross my fingers that this router will last the full 3 year warranty period and beyond.

For the price with a $20 rebate, can't go wrong.

Failed to work after one year, August 6, 2005
By user (Fairfax, VA United States)
It worked well until a little bit after a year --- their warranty time. Called them but was told that if the wired part works, the wireless should work too. I used it as a wired router then for another 4 months. And the wired connection is now getting intermittently interrupted. It's a piece of junk!

    Started easily...working great, August 2, 2005
By user (Houston, TX)
I was able to set up the router easily on my warner cable system. Didn't take long. I live in an apartment, so range isn't a big issue. But I'm on excellent reception all the time. For the money, I can't believe I waited this long to go wireless.

Looks nice.... but not great., July 31, 2005
By user (Chapel Hill, NC USA)
I own a wired router and wanted a new one so I said why not get a wireless one? I got the Netgear and It was easy to set up but the signal is horrible. I am on the second floor and getting very poor signal. Also with the computers that I had hooked up with the wired feature was also slow. It is a OK router for a small home. If you want to bridge routers DO NOT BUY THIS!!

    Junk, July 28, 2005
By user (Chicago)
Have had this router for 1.5 years. It worked for a while, and then would periodically drop connections. Calling Netgear is great, if you have 1 hour to spend on hold. Once you get someone on the phone, they are rude, assume you are ignorant, and then, maybe will replace it. I was sent a replacement unit, and it had a huge crack on the front. I called Netgear, and they said if it works, why do you care? What? Anyway, got a replacement unit that was not cracked, and it worked for 1 month (probably someone else's return), and called Netgear. I was told to re-install the firmware. Again... what?? Who has ever heard of re-installing firmware? This router is junk, and I will not buy another Netgear product (although I have a switch of theirs, and it works fine). Bad products, bad service. Linksys or Airport here I come...

This Netgear router worked flawlessly for me for ONE year. After that it intermittently would loose wireless connection.

    Scam, July 16, 2005

I thought for a while that my DSL provider's modem was screwed up until I found out that there was some sort of problem with the router. I purcahsed this particular router thinking that a different brand would not have the same problems as my linksys wireless router. However, after speaking with SBC for about 20 minutes and another 20 minutes on the phone with netgear I found out it was a software not hardware problem; since I bought the router over 90 days ago, I don't have free tech support anymore. Henceforth since it isn't a hardware problem I would have had to pay 32.95 just to fix a configuration problem, rendering the 3 year warranty on the router pretty much useless. I only payed $40 for the router! The customer service is horrendous there. The guy did not explain what he was telling me to do. I was unaware that there were still companies that charged for tech support on electronics. Wow. It seems like they have some sort of magical thing that goes wrong on them so you have to either pay for tech support or buy a new router. Thankfully, I managed to reconfigure it myself to get it to work. Boycott Netgear.
