WGT624v2 overheating issues, November 27, 2007
By Wolfgang Herbel
Purchased the product in 2005 unfortunately the version 2. Had to unplug the router every 2-3 hours since it lost the network connection. I've read other articles about this version and after I managed to create some additional ventilation the problem went away. Gave the router to a friend and replaced it with WNR834B, which works like a charm. No drops, high connection speed and very reliable. However Netgear should replace v2 free of charge for a v3 or higher.

Beware of this piece of junk!, November 24, 2007
By Sawdustmaker (Yonkers, New York)
Netgear used to be a company that was known for its quality, no cost tech support, and great value in their networking products. No longer is this the case. Offshored and clueless tech support, questionable products, countless forum posts documenting the problems with this router, class action suit threatened on this very product - should enter into your decision-making process as you shop around for a wireless router. While writing this review my router crashed twice, requiring a powerdown reboot to get it running. There is a documented problem with the firmware updating feature, and the latest update is quite old and fixed no problems. On the plus side, its very easy to set up and get running, but you only do that once. After the router is running, it is a frustrating piece of garbage. At times it will work for days on end. Then there will be a period where it will crash 10X a day. A call to tech support is even more frustrating. It drops you into an offshore call center, where you have to deal with a language barrier, tech's unfamiliarity with the product, inability to escalate the problem to a supervisor, and a response that includes an RMA if it is in warranty or send it back for an out of warranty repair. Bottom line, its a piece of junk. Don't buy it or any other products from this questionable company. If there was a way to record zero stars for this product I would.

Will not allow big files copied from a wireless computer, November 16, 2007
By Ms. Sara L. Rheault (Eagan, Mn USA)
This is a goofy switch! It works fine for web browsing and I can copy large files from computer to computer when both are wired connections but when my laptop is wireless it dies when I start the copy. Buy a different product....Save yourself!!!

Horrible, November 10, 2007
By jd (Boston)
It worked for a few days then bit the dust. I was on the telephone with tech support for almost two hours. Tech support has very limited knowledge of other programs you may be using to utilize the router. After being on the telephone for what seemed like forever it worked again for a few minutes and only thanks to something I had done... then gone. Also bad: I had to register the product on line before I could even get tech support. I returned it and bought a less expensive Linksys router that works great.

Only a rental, November 6, 2007
By Heyexplorer (Portland, OR USA)
I've bought two of these so far, but never again. Both broke after the 90-day warranty but before a year was out. So remember, they look cheap, work great at first, but you are really only renting this box for a couple of months.

Good, October 17, 2007
By Les Leung
It's very easy to set up and so far it has been working good. I have internet phone and I don't have the problem being cut-off in the middle of my phone calls. Also the price is good comparing with other stores.

Very unreliable and discontinued product, September 20, 2007
By E. Traitel (Cupertino, CA)
I purchased this router expecting great performance, range and security. I ended up being a very frustrated customer, getting used to power cycle this every 2 hours after losing connectivity. It's very obvious that it's all related to software bugs. Nevertheless, Netgear did not release any new firmware to this product for over a year.
This is my 2nd Netgear router and been frustrated with the old one yet was too optimistic to try this one. Quality sucks! I'm enforced to buy a new router but this time I'll go with one that supports Linux 3rd-party firmware. Thinking of Linksys WRT54GL. At least I won't have to wait forever for the manufacturer to deliver new firmware (even though it's clear from the support site that there are updates all the time - that's what I call a reliable platform).

A tale of routers, big and small., August 11, 2007
By F. Behn (Wisconsin)
I've worked with many different routers both professionally on big networks and at home for my own network. For home, I've had the best luck with Netgear and the WGT624 was no exception. I got it out, did the minimal install stuff, and it was up and running. So far it is working great with excellent signal strength. I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to others, especially those who really need a plug in and go device.

Worked okay for about a year or so..., July 30, 2007
By ppost02 (Ohio)
My first experience with Netgear routers was with a RP614(?). I used it for about a year with no problems. Then I got a laptop so I decided to get a Netgear WGT624 so that I could have wireless access for my laptop. I've been using it for a little over a year and now it's started dropping connection. At first I wasn't sure what was causing the "Network Cable Unplugged" message but then I looked at the router when this happened and saw it appeared to be rebooting. There was no power outage, or any other reason for this to happen. Sometimes it happens several times a day, sometimes not at all. Meanwhile, I gave my old RP614 that had been sitting on a shelf for a year to a friend. It no longer worked! It worked fine when I stopped using it but somehow "died" sitting on the shelf. I thought maybe there was a problem with the friend's internet setup, so hooked it back up to my modem, identical to previous setup, and would not work. Looking for a new router but will not buy Netgear again.

Excellent router with lots of features, July 17, 2007
By OhioGardener (Ohio)
Bought this router to replace a piece of junk Linksys WRT54G. The WRT54G, like every other Linksys I've ever had, needed to be rebooted constantly and had poor features and range.
The Netgear has at least twice the range and rarely needs a reboot.

Works well for now, June 25, 2007
By Ryan Johnson
I was reading a review about how this does not work with the xbox 360, and i just wanted to tell anybody who cares that it does. I just hooked it up and played a game of halo. My room is about 50 feet away from the router and i only get 3 bars, which is ok. I also have a ps3 and wii, but have not tried to hook those up yet. the only reason why i gave it 4 stars was because i only get 3 bars, but it's probably something that i did and not the router itself. A good website to check out is cnet.com, they gave it a 7.9 out of 10, which is a good rating.

Netgear WGT624 works great No connection drops, June 7, 2007
By Network Guru (USA)
Netgear WGT624 works great. Installation was simple. I download windows vista driver before I begin and burn a CD as recommended by netgear. Router works great but drops Internet connection. If you have the same problem then change IDLE TIMEOUT in BASIC Settings under Internet service provider login. This timer logs you out from Internet connection when there is no Internet activity. I set it to 0 to not logout. Since then the router works fine and I am enjoying greater speed.

Works well with dual boot Intel Macbook., April 12, 2007
By Fullyautomated
I just set one of these up with a dual boot Intel Macbook using WPA2 & the wireless connection is excellent in OS X & Win XP Pro. You have to download a patch for XP in order to use WPA2. I give the router five stars because it's relatively inexpensive & provides excellent signal strength in both OS's. Windows was kind of a pain to set up, but Windows is... Windows.

INCOMPATIBLE WITH MANY DEVICES!, April 5, 2007
By spy-hunter (Honolulu, HI)
Ok, UNBELIEVABLE BUT TRUE, the following devices, refuse and WILL NOT connect to the WGT624 Wireless Router:
>>XBOX360<< (with 360 Wireless Adapter - latest updates) >>PSP<< (with latest firmware) >>MACBOOK<< (which is based upon the widely used Atheros chipset, and this was tested in both OSX and Windows Vista - also latest updates all around)...
A DELL AXIM and other Netgear wireless products will connect, so it's not entirely useless, but Good luck in getting it connected with your device...

Inexpensive, easy setup, great range, March 17, 2007
By Walter (Seattle, WA)
I was looking for a wireless router to help me work from different areas of the home. Needed ease of setup with home PC's (4) and my work laptop. After reviewing the new pre-N and N routers, decided this was all I needed for in home use. Very pleased with the range - through walls anywhere in the home (2700 sq. ft.) both levels, and in the back yard in my 1/4 acre lot. Easy setup once I got my PC's DVD/CD Rom working. Walked me right through it. I also use VOIP for my home office phone but due to issues I heard about through CNET and other tech ratings decided to wire the router after the cable/phone modem. Works like a charm and no service interruptions. I also have hardwired the home PC's through this router and successfully logged each PC onto the network after a simple re-boot of the PC's, all running WIN XP. Need something for a simple home network, with wireless capability, this is it. My second Netgear router and I'm throughly happy. I even attached another router at the end of the network for more connectivity for other PC's and have great success logging onto the new in home network. My home office VPN works great with no issues. Would but this product again and again. solid signals at great ranges!

I live in a small apt., so I'm not sure about the range.

Great IP connection, but!, March 7, 2007
By Fred Schellenberg (Windber, PA)
I bought this router the day before I received my new Gateway NX570X laptop. It installed beautifully within 30 minutes and both my desktop and laptop connected to the internet. Beautiful, but I have still not been able to share any resources between the two PC's. Any comments/suggestions most welcomed! [edit] Less than 30 minutes after posting this I found out that my S/W firewall was the culprit. I turned it off on both PC's and I guess I have to increase my 4-star rating to 5-stars. Strange that Gateway techs couldn't find this problem.

Great Router, March 6, 2007
By Hasan Bayezid (FL,US)
This router is very useful and even though i was very very skeptical when looking at these revies before my purchase I went ahead and took the risk and overall I'm very happy because the router hasn't dropped any connections so far and the speed is also at a good average. This router is great for gaming as well.

Support is non-existent and you will need it, March 5, 2007
By buyerlsd (edinburgh)
On my third Netgear router now and same experience with each. The boxes say 24 hour support. Well with the first router I emailed for 6 months and all I got back was inappropriate emails. I tried calling but was always told it needed escalated and I would get a call back, which I never did.
With the second router the Internet connection kept dropping (wireless) after I did a firmware upgrade to the latest (still the latest for it). I filled out the online support form but only keep getting blanket email responses that are not relevant and I have been chasing it for 2 months.
Now on this third router, when the new Firefox and IE came out the interface stopped working. I mean have the buttons do not work including the firmware upgrade options. I've tried emailing and calling about this. I get non-sense replies from people based in India to the emails and when I call I get people based in India telling me I need second level support who will call me back and who never do.
I had to give up on my newish router, swear I'd never buy Netgear again and went out and bought a Draytek instead. It cost a lot more but I value ongoing Internet connectivity and my time too much to have more Netgear experiences.
