WGT624 Works great... but don't Flash it unless you have to!, April 21, 2004
By DarkFury (Indianapolis, IN United States)
I got my WGT624 about a month ago and when I first got it, it prompted me to look for new firmware... and like an idiot, I went ahead and clicked yes and downloaded the newest firmware... BIG MISTAKE!!!

The unit never had a chance... the firmware hosed it like nobody's busines.

But never fear... I called Netgear and talked to tech support (...), however eventually they came to the conclusion that the unit was hosed and that it would have to be replaced under warranty (since it was brand spankin' new). You can get more details on my encounter with their "tech support" here: http://chimptopia.com/pimptopia/031304.shtml

When the new unit arrived... I didn't flash it this time and it worked flawlessly. I'm very happy with its performance and having fast video streaming from one PC to another in my network is great.

It gets 4 stars just because when you first boot it up, it asks you to look for new firmware which caused my problem below. Honestly, they should change that... cause that is just ASKING for problems.

Does not work with Microsoft Games., April 21, 2004

I was very unhappy with this product when I installed it and it did not work with Microsoft's Asheron's Call. I had to get a tech support to come to my house to work with my router for TWO HOURS! It came up short and the router still doesn't work well. There are still many bugs with the new wireless G Netgear routers. There is way more speed than you actually need in a house hold. You can spend much less on a product that gives you much better quality and support.

Sincerly,
Robert D.

This product is such a piece of junk I feel compelled to write a review. It took hours to set up (and I've been a professional computer programmer for 6 years). Tech support has you try the same things - over and over and over again. After a while I said "screw it" and got it working myself. Then it stops working one day. No reason, no changes. Do you really want to put yourself through this?

Is there anything lower than 1 star?

Great features but plauged with a serious problem, April 5, 2004
By sofsoldier (Pacifica, CA)
This unit has some wonderful features for the price, but it is no stable when the wireless mode is enabled. Ever 2 to 4 hours, the unit goes through this rebooting process that cannot be stopped. There is no issue listed on the Netgear website, and Netgear has yet to respond to my inquiry, but do a Google search for "WGT624 unit reboots" and you will see what I mean.

It is best to avoid this product and choose something else. Is is suspected that the "Atheros" chip is to blame, whatever that means! I guess find a wireless router that does not use an "Atheros" chip.

I have owned the WGT624 since November 2003 (version 1), and have never had a problem with it that I can recall. I don't know what a lot of these other reviewers are doing to theirs, but mine works flawlessly. I have recently updated the firmware to the latest version (4?) without even a hiccup. SPI is enabled and the WGT624 doesn't lose any speed with my 3.0 Mbit Comcast ISP (thru a Motorola SB5100 cable modem). All wireless devices I own work without a problem, and the WGT624 has never, ever, spontaneously rebooted on me! This router is secure, port forwarding works like a charm, and it takes little to no expertise to configure the WGT624 to do what you need it to do. Granted, calling tech support is useless, but a simple search on the web with your problem will point you in the right direction. If you need to connect multiple devices to your broadband ISP, require secure wireless connections, and like the benefits of the built-in firewall, then you can't go wrong with the WGT624. Highly recommended.

Super-quick installation, great performance, great upgrade!!, March 28, 2004
By TJ Balski (Orlando, FL United States)
I bought this router as an upgrade to a Linksys 802.11b router, which wasn't working well with a newly-purchased Dell laptop [Inspiron 8600 w/ a Dell TrueMobile 1300 WiFi card]...

I will tell you all that from the moment I opened the box, it barely took 8 minutes to remove the Linksys, hook up the NetGear, fire up the PC & cable modem, and run through the setup instructions. The Netgear router auto-configured the cable modem settings during the setup; it was a breeze!!!

Dell laptop owners, take note. This router works great with the TrueMobile 1300 b/g WiFi card!!! The Linksys [short range performance drop-off!!] didn't have a prayer!!! I got great performance throuout my apartment (just haven't been brave enough to try it outside or in the shower...).

Cheap and useless, March 20, 2004
By Stephen Antoniuk (Turlock, CA United States)
I ordered this item thinking it would be as easy to setup as my Netgear B router. Not only would it not sync with my cable modem but the router itself looks like a cheap knockoff. I have a custom antenna for my B and was looking forward to the added speed but it seems Netgear has cut corners and added a non replaceable antenna. Avoid this item.

Simple product to install and use-even for me!, March 18, 2004
By hdspringer98
I bought this expecting some difficulty setting it up based on some reviews on CNET. A key thing I knew going in was that you definately want the v2 version. You can tell it's the v2 because it'll have a yahoo sticker on the box along with a green starburst claiming extended range. The unit will have a v2 next to the model number on the bottom. This took me no more than 15 minutes to set up the router and 2 wireless notebook adapters. I have comcast cable for internet. Everything worked perfectly 1st try on my windows 2000 notebook. Some minor tweaking on my Window98 machine for work and it all works fine. Even my corporate VPN works and XBOX live no problems. Definately recommended.

    Didn't like my modem, March 13, 2004

I purchased this router and companion laptop card from Compusa. They provided a free installation service by professionals. The pro worked two solid hours trying to install the wireless system. The hangup was the router repeatedly shut down my modem. The modem is an RCA unit provided by Time Warner cable. Maybe there is a problem with this modem but it worked fine with a Netgear 11 Mbps router. This problem still existed after the pro downloaded and installed the latest firmware updates from the Netgear website. I had to return the router and card. I guess I'll wait for the high speed stuff to mature a little more. Don't really want to go through the same thing with D-Link et al.

I've been trying to get this up and going for 3 hours. AAHH!, March 13, 2004

I bought this router because a friend and the Best Buy computer guru suggested it. You better know exactly what you are doing because tech support is on Mars!! I think I am going to have to reach them by telepathy. I may be taking this back in 2 days if I can't get it up and going by then. I use Netscape, not Internet Explorer. I don't know if that is making a difference. However, I am feeling very hostile to Netgear right now.

Very Good Product, March 11, 2004
By Kyung Ahn (bayside, ny United States)
I purchased this router with the Netgear WG511T wireless card. I must admit the setup was very straight forward. I did need to configure the router and card 2x to get the 108 Mbps. Maybe it was something I did or didn't do correctly the first time (channel 6)?

Anyway, the range is fantastic and so far I have not experienced any loss in connection. The only reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is that it does not work with my Motorla Analog Telephone Adapter (Vonage VoIP). I must first connect the ethernet cable from my modem to the ATA then to the router.

The unit is very slim and is unobtrusive. It comes with a stand so that it can be set vertically rather than horizontally.

Hope this helps.

Easy to install; excellent range, March 11, 2004

I just replaced my Netgear MR314 wireless router with the WGT624 model. Total time from box to net surfing was 9 minutes. (It did take an additional half hour to update the firmware and reset the passwords.)

The range of the WGT624 is a big improvement over the MR314. I used to have to worry about reception shadows cast by the refrigerator; now I have wireless access inside the refrigerator (as long as the door is open). More seriously, we are getting usable access throughout the house, using an airport card in an apple titanium powerbook (notoriously bad for reception of weak signals.)

Great product, terrible support, March 7, 2004

The WGT624v2 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router has being working great since I finally found a friend to help me set up the wireless network. I had many difficulties trying to connect to the router, because of some mismatch IP address due to some network bridges. In the beginning I tried to call customer support, but I have to admit that is terrible. They sent you to an operator in New Delhi, India, which has a very difficult accent to understand. Is not that I am against the way Indians talk English, but I expect that if I call customer support from USA I will be able to understand what they are saying instead of asking them to repeat the same thing 3 times or more in order to understand them. They also seem that they do not really know how to help you out in setting up the wireless connection. After my friend figure out what was the problem, he was surprised that the customer help guy did not know the origin of my problem.

I feel that the product itself is great, but the customer support is terrible. I would not mind having to pay a little more money for any electronic product if the company offers me a competent customer support which is easy to understand.

Up and running in about 3/4 hours total, March 6, 2004

I installed the router in my desktop in about 1/2 hour, thank goodness it recognized all the settings it needed(cable modem)because I probably would have been lost in finding them or would have had to call my cable company support. It took about an additional 15 minuets to install in my laptop and everything there was detected fine also. I was actually connected to the internet on my laptop without knowing it. I realized it when my Norton Anti Virus sent me a message that my virus files had just been updated.
Just as the documentation said the router looked for and found an update and installed it(about 2mins with cable modem) and I was done.
It came up in 54Mbs mode and I am going to leave it that way for the time being so I can't report about the 108Mbs mode, but I am thorougly pleased with this product so far.

    Netgear WGT624 802.11G 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router, February 25, 2004
By lizzie (CA, USA)
I just installed the router and the corresponding 108mbps card with no problems. My computer detected the wireless signal right away and i was on the internet in no time. The only issue is that I was only running at 54mbps max. Nobody told me that the router combo will only run the 108mbps in channel 6. I called tech support and i could barely understand the person on the other line who otherwise sounded annoyed that i couldnt understand him. That was why I only gave it 4 stars.

I just got this unit as a replacement for my
dlink di-514 router, which had problems on its
wireless port.

setup wizard worked great. i was up and running
in 5 minutes. so far performace is great. no
more random disconnects like with the dlink.

software is nice explains every field for you in detail.

I read in other reviews people trashed this device for
software problems. they apparently fixed everything since
then.

I highly reccomend this wireless router.

    Wonderfull Item, February 20, 2004

After reading the reviews on this site, I was a little weary as to purchasing this product. Especially considering I have SBC DSL, with a speed stream modem, that conveniently has the exact same ip address as the router.
All I had to do was unplug the DSL modem, log directly into the router, Change the ip, and make sure that the ip I set the router to would not be issued to the workstations. Also to get the 108Mb card to work I had to use wireless channel 6.
Once this was done everything works great

By Michael G. Deschane (Phoenix, Az. United States)
The device claims 108 mbps at "up to 500 feet" I have not been able to maintain a reliable 54 mbps connection at 30 feet. Netgear tech support claims 108 mbps connections "three houses away". I have less than 50% signal strength across the street and I cannot get a 108 mbps connection next less than 5 feet from the hub. Netgear tech support has not responded to my last e-mail dated 2/5/04 as of 2/13/04.

The interface is simple to use and setup can be complete in less that 15 minutes for a reasonably savvy person. The interface is a little buggy but not so that most users would notice. For example, the firmware level is not visible by way of any button, tab or link that I have been able to find.

A genuine logging function of inbound and outbound packets would be nice. A text based telnet setup would be a plus.

I bought the WGT624 a few days ago and was up and running in less than half an hour using the web and email from 2 different machines. The other computer which is wirelessly connected to the 624 uses a USB 11.b (from Netgear i think ME101) adapter and it connected without a hitch. The firewall part of the router is straight forward, even though the web based interface is slow. be patient for those new settings to take hold (30 sec.) if you use p2p voice_ip and such be prepared to know a little something about which ports those apps need and how to free them up. I live in an old house with huge stonewalls (2.5 feet thick) and it doesn't seem to slow the connection at all. the second computer is 30 feet away, 2 rooms between and the reception is "excellent" To me the WGT624 is a winner

It's fast, easy to set-up and fun to sit on the couch and browse. For two or more people living under one roof with lap-tops, it definitely makes sense. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner.

For those of you not router savvy (myself included), connect the computer you intend to be wireless through the router FIRST with a hardline, make an internet connection and THEN make a wireless connection. You may have to adjust settings in (XP) control panel. ...
