Great range, cumbersome firmware update, January 26, 2004
By wildbird123 (The beautiful Garden State)
Over the last couple of years I have set up over 50 wireless networks, using most major brands. Just for reference, my favorite router is the Dell 2300, which not only offers good reliability but also great range and the best customization features on any residential router so far. I set up this router with FW3.02 in parallel to a Dell, expecting it to offer lower signal levels, but I was plesantly surprised that it in fact offered 2-5dB higher levels at most locations and actually gave me great range. Set up was straight forward, firmware upgrade with serial number is cumbersome. Configuration options are good, but no access point mode (can usually be faked by diabling dhcp and using lan1 input) and no bridge mode(like Dell), are a set-back, in particular since Netgear advertizes this as a "commercial grade" product.

Pros:
-range
-easy basic set-up

Cons:
-cumbersome FW upgrade
-less customization options than some others

Easy set up and works just fine, January 25, 2004
By memyselfandi (Highland, NY United States)
I am your basic non-computer geek and I got this router set up along with a Netgear card on 2 laptops in about an hour total. It works fine on both I was worried about the interaction with the connection I have to use to get into the network were I work but I didn't have any problems.
I set up the SSID and password and all is well. It works in every room of my house, upstairs and down
Oh yeah, referencing another review: I have a 2.4 ghz phone and I found it had no effect on using this router and card

Incompatibilty with DSL Modem, January 19, 2004
By victor (parkland, fl United States)
I experienced a problem which can't be fixed by the Netgear or D-link support desk.

If you are using an Alcatel DSL modem (speed touch home), Netgear router Wgt624 and D-Link DI 624 are incompatible with this equipment.

I bought both and was not able to connect them through PPPoE to my ISP. Both router were returned to the store.

My only solution was to return to Linksys standard B router BEFSW11s4.

I didn't find any information about DSL modem compability.

Hope this review help.

Works okay but..., January 13, 2004
By Jos Ver (Dallas, TX)
After returning first unit (would not broadcast signal) was able to setup without problems. Have WGT511T 108Mbps PC Card in notebook but have to use WG121 54G USB adapter with other desktop PC since Netgear has no 108Mbps adapter yet. Sometimes desktop has trouble logging in and I have to power cycle the router and then okay. Having trouble getting Linksys WGA54G game adapter (with PS2) to connect and can't find any solutions from Netgear, Linksys or Sony. May have to wait on router firmware upgrade (already using latest 3.0.2).

not out of the box hookup, January 13, 2004
By unknown
I did eventually get this thing working, but it took all day and lots of fussing, checking, and double checking to get even simple security settings to work. As well the manual could use some more technical details and cross referencing. In the end cannot be sure where the problem was, as the settings on my Dell TrueMobile 1150 wireless card are slightly different than those on the router. Initially I did have lots of signal drops but then that 'magically' stopped as well. Go figure.
But still, renewing the IP in the router software settings causes a connection loss that is only solved by flashing both the router and cable modem - could be either device in that case. I am happy with it overall - but I would probably buy a 802.11b/g only if I were to buy one (this one was a gift). It is my understanding that you need the corresponding proprietary netgear card to get the 108Mbps speeds.

wireless woes -- returned for a refund, January 13, 2004
By jbn (boulder, co United States)
this router is far less reliable than the linksys 802.11b router. sometimes the wireless abilities just lock up for no apparent reason, and the router has to be power-cycled. it also resets the lan several times a day, which kicks me out of my vpn connection to remote office. upgrading firmware didn't solve the problems, and netgear's customer support is *weak* at best. i'm ridding myself of this buggy junk, and reinstalling my old tried-and-true 802.11b router. maybe this thing will be stable in a few months, but i'm finished being one of netgear's low-rent beta tester.

Excellent Range! And Speed!, January 12, 2004

I hooked this up with the Netgear WGT511T card and the base is about 35 below, and through 2 floors....and I receive signal strength of about 75% in my bedroom....downloads buzz along at 300-400k per second with the cable modem....VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER!

This did not work at all with my old Cisco 802.11B card...kept dropping connection...but with the Netgear cards...no problem...

Keeps dropping wireless connection, January 10, 2004
By unknown
Bought the WGT624 router with WGT511T wireless card. Updated to latest firmware for both. Wireless connection often keeps getting lost after a few hours of an initially successful connection. Another Microsoft router that was borrowed seems to have no such trouble. Support site on Netgear website not terribly helpful.

Poor Support. Won't work with SBC dsl., January 6, 2004
By Thomas P House (Watsonville, CA United States)
Tried 2 unites with my Alcatel 1000 DSL modem w/ SBC. Modem access is fine, and Netgears FVS318 router works fine. But 2 separtae WGT 624s I purchased cannot connect to the internet through the modem. Netgear's support is slow and non responsive. They haven't fixed the router or refunded my money and they take 2-3 weeks between emails before responding at all, and when they do respond, it is with no soluction. I've spend over 10 hours on this with nothing but headaches.

    A pretty nice product!, December 21, 2003
By ejf302 (Baltimore, MD United States)
I am a big fan of Netgear products. This one is a nice product as well. It has just been released so it is still just a little "buggy."

First the good things .... it is pretty much plug and play. The only extra thing I had to do is configure the wireless so I would have the tightest security. Seems pretty fast in 108 mbps mode.

Now the bad things. Out of the box, it would not support RAS. I had to download and apply a firmware patch before I could work from home with it. And it is pretty slow whenever you apply any configuration changes - once you hit APPLY, it sits there for close to 30 seconds before the change is complete. I'm used to the prosafe line where it is almost immediate.

But still, you can't beat the features for such a low price.

Good Range, Good Speed, Better than Linksys G, December 19, 2003
By hawkman_va (Chesapeake, Virginia United States)
I have set up Linksys and the Microsoft Router and this was by far the easiest. For the main PC, I pluged in the router to the pc and the cable modem then turned on the pc. It was instantly connected. I did not install any software. For the laptop using the Netgear 108Mbps card, I installed the software then pluged in the card and was on the internet in less than 2 minutes.

Comparing to the Linksys I own, I am able to go further in the house using Netgear's own 108Mpbs setting. You have to have their card to get to the 108 otherwise it will go to regular 56Mps.

The web browser interface is easier to understand than Linksys and seems better for someone who is trying this out for the first time. I set up a Microsoft for my brother and that was a pain for some reason.

The signal strength is good at places that the Linksys wasn't but this is probably due to the gact that it is using all of the available channels that typical G doesn't. So far no problems, only time will tell.

Great router, except when I use my Uniden 2.4Ghz ph, December 17, 2003
By ARomero (Euless, TX United States)
The router is great, I love all the features, range is excellent, and speed is very good...

Except when I use my wireless 2.4GHz phone. When I activate the phone the ENTIRE network gets trashed. No connections from any device whatsoever (even if physically connected).

This is a horrible flaw for an otherwise excellent router.

BAD Technical Support, December 13, 2003
By unknown
This product has a LOT of problems; have not been able to get it to work with my HP printer 3330 with IP connectivty - working with IPX but that is a problem for my other machines on the network - I had a linksys which worked fine except for hackers crashing it all the time! Level 1 tech support is HORRIBLE - it's all outsourced - no one knows what they are doing and they are really rude - ask for level 2 immediately! Also IP assignment function does not appear to work either...I'm within hours of returning this thing - if it wasn't for the firewall being better than on the linksys product, it would be gone

No Problems here, December 10, 2003
By J. Hollis (TX, United States)
I bought this router along with the WG511T card and have had nothing but good luck. I've set up wireless networks before, so I can't comment on beginners setting this up, but things were simple and well documented for me.

The range of this thing is great. I had it sitting on the floor of the office in the front of my house and I was still getting 96mbps out by my back fence. I have a decent size yard so I was very surprised at the speed at that range.

I've had no issue with interference from phones or other electrical equipment. The firewall side of it is a little weak, but for everything else you get I can't complain.

This thing works great in B/G mode as well. A friend came over with his B card and both of us were connected in my kitchen at full speed (him at 11 mbps and me at 54mbps). That's with 128 WEP turned on as well. Another review stated severe performance issues with WEP enabled...I haven't had any issues.

Overall, this router lived up to its promise. Would highly recommend.

Overall, fine product as advertized., November 30, 2003

Overall, this product has a better wireless range than my old wireless router. The only problem that I have is that it hang up quite often like once every other day. I downloaded the latest firmware 3.0.2 but it does not help. I have to push the little button at the back of the box to reset the box, then connect to the box using wired (wireless does not work all the time) connection, then the wireless connection works. I also have problem with the tech support's English. If someone knows a version of the firmware provides more stable connection, please post a message.

Thank you.

    Works great, November 28, 2003
By Castell (USA)
(...). Kept losing connection. Both the WGT624 with the PC card WG511T. it works like a charm right out the box. installed the PC card first on a XP machine, router next and bingo was on line. Total time of install less than 25 minutes (including the time to install the software).
PRO:Quick install, never loss connection, near automatic configration.
CON: Expensive than most 802.11g, did not get the 108mbs speeds as yet.

    !!!Great Disappointment!!!, November 27, 2003
By Lindsay (Wade, NC United States)
I did my homework via the tech web sites and PC magazines and had high expectations. I carefully purchased all Netgear equipment with the new 108 Mpbs standard, and consulted with a professional during the installation. Reception faded badly beyond 25-30 feet from the router, with no other electronic equipment in operation. I lost the signal entirely once I turned on my 2.4 Ghz cordless phone. I anticipated some interference from the phone, but this is ridiculous.
After spending over an hour on the phone with Netgear tech support dealing with someone I could not understand for the thick accent and who was clearly reading from a script, I boxed up over $300.00 of equipment and returned it for a refund.
I am extremely happy with my D-Link ethernet router and hard wired network!!!

    shabby range...., November 24, 2003
By PCWW (New Orleans, Louisiana United States)
I had pretty high expectations purchasing this product. After researching many different routers on the internet I thought I would give this one a try because it boasted excellent speed and range. While i can agree it is very fast and works very well within the confines of one room it definately lacks long range performance. I was barely able to get 60 ft away from the router, albeit this distance does require the signal going through two rooms. Tech support wasn't much help and said they don't guarantee it will operate well in other rooms besides the one the router was located in. Not to mention b/w the three calls placed, I couldn't understand one of the techs. They all seemed foreign and really struggled with the english language. All in all my experience with NetGeart was not very favorable. -

Netgear WGT624 was slower than old Linksys befw11s4ug, November 23, 2003
By unknown
I have the new WGT624 Netgear router and it was slower than my old Linksys befw11s4ug. I also disabled the SPI and performance improved.

I have the setup the same on both routers -- MAC spoofing, as I am an old bridged account with my ISP and my MAC is used for authentication

When I connected directly from PC or through the Linksys, pages load fast (www.edmunds.com is a good test). When I connect with the WGT624, pages load slow.

When I run a bandwidth test at bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ my download speed is 1.3 Mbps with the WGT624. I ran the same test with the tool on www.broadbandreports.com and the speed was 1.1 Mbps.

I disabled SPI based on the post from jeeames from Houston, TX and that increased the speed to almost that of the Linksys.

Also, the router does not work well with Alcatel modems. I had my ISP send me a new modem from Westell and things improved--Netgear will send Alcatel owners a special cable to connect between the modem and router, but I found the performance slow (I am not sure if the problem was really the cable or SPI, as I did not try the router with the cable connected to the Alcatel 1000 and SPI turned off).

Now that I connected, I am generally happy with the router--it took a month, three routers, a new modem, a service call with my ISP and a lot of time, but I have increased my wireless surfing in my house several fold. I am waiting on Netgear to send out a firmware update that addresses the SPI issue.

I've set up hundreds of firewalls and routers over the years, wired and wireless, and I've seen all sorts of outrageous manufacturer claims about ease of use and functionality. This is the first product that delivered. I switched to Cable from DSL and when my old equipment wouldn't cut it, I bought this little gem. Plugged it in, auto-configured everything, and it worked the first time. My last router took me hours to get set up right. This one figured it out by itself. If you need a new router, buy this one. Downside? The range is not as good as my old wireless hub.

A few months ago, I moved the router, and the range picked up to expected distances. So I guess the antenna pattern was just different than my last one.
