| Description: |
| Think of the Network Everywhere Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a kind of "splitter" for your Internet connection. Just connect your DSL or Cable Modem to the Router, and all the computers in your household can share the Internet - all at the same time. You can connect your home computers to the Router with Ethernet cables, or put wireless network adapters in them and communicate over radio waves, saving the trouble and expense of running cables through your house.Once your computers are connected to the Router, they can communicate with each other too, sharing resources and files. All your computers can print on a shared printer connected anywhere in the house. And your computers can share all kinds of files - music, digital pictures, and documents. Keep all your digital music on one computer, and listen to it anywhere in the house. Organize all of your family's digital pictures in one place, to simplify finding the ones you want, and easing backup to CD-R. Utilize extra free space on one computer when another's hard drive starts to fill up.Your home network is secure, too. All wireless communications are protected by 128-bit encryption. Internet Firewall packet filters keep intruders out, and block attacks. Parental Controls help you protect your family. It's all easier than you think - the included Setup Wizard takes you through configuring your network, step by step. With the Network Everywhere Wireless Cable/DSL Router at the heart of your home network, you don't need to be a networking genius to share printers, files, and your Internet connection - with or without wires. |

avoid it, April 19, 2006
By A. Morales
if you plan to buy this, DO NOT update the firmware, i updated mine, now my router is dead. it is a common problem. the tech people couldn't help me. some people online say they got theirs to work again, but i had no such luck.
what kind of company puts out an update that could permanently damage their product?

Whats with all the bad reviews?, September 29, 2005
By Tech can Kill (Toronto Canada)
I have owned my NWR04B wireless router for approx 1 year now, and i never have had a problem with it... Ok 1 problem, The port forwards dont always work as they should. But from experience this is a problem with many routers. I also bought my router at the staples boxing day sale for 20 bucks. I dont know why some people are saying signal strength is poor. Jeeze i can use this thing halfway down the block, and the 20 something apartments in my building are always leeching my internet. Here are a few things i have noted though, the faster your internet connection is the better the wireless is. I used to have the LITE service that my ISP offered and I never had any problems with connectivity in my apartment. I let my neighbour also jack into the wireless during this time however he could only access it right by the window closest to the box. However i did an upgrade of my internet service to the fastest that they have, and now I can use this baby all over the 3 story complex. another thing to note... someone mentioned that their box overheats, this is true - my router used to get very hot. But I had a spare DC adapter laying around for the same voltage... and now there are no overheating problems.

Absolutely Horrible Product, May 27, 2005
By K. Hollis (Alabama)
This looked like a great deal. It set up and configured very easily. I'm very technical but even someone with limited technical abilities could set this up. It worked fine out of the box on my DSL connection.
Then it started, every other day, it will disconnect, requiring a reset of the router, a reset of the dsl modem, or a reboot of the PC, and sometimes all three. Most of the time a reset of the router does the trick.
But it's absolutely annoying. Their support is horrible and incompetent. From what I've read elsewhere, this is a common problem for almost everyone that has purchased this product.
Spend a little more money and get something that's reliable. I can't imagine this company staying in business much longer.

Don't flash it..., March 6, 2005
By john (Bluefield, IL)
Like a lot of others i saw this for $20 at Staples. Cheap for a wireless router and if it's crap, well i'm only out $20. Well, i guess i'm out $20. Played with it for a little while and it seemed fine, but like every other tweaker i thought i'd upgrade the firmware before finalizing it's usage. Bad idea. Flash said it was successful but afterwards the diagnostics light came on and stayed on. No more DHCP, no more browser connectivity, no IP on the router, no router (I think the switch aspect may still be OK).
Bottom line, for $20 i would have been happy with even poor wireless functionality, but no functionality is no good. If you buy one, don't flash it.
Now where's that damn receipt.....

Cheap but Unreliable, January 6, 2005
By grad student
Pros: Cheap, small, good LED indicators Cons: Freezes up every couple of days requiring reset, firmware hard to get
I bought the NWR04b at a Boxing Day sale at Staples for just $19 Canadian. I already have a wireless router and was looking for a 4-port hub, and this was cheaper than a hub, so I thought I would try it for a lark. The physical product is impressive with abundant LED's for port and box status, I was able to get full bandwidth (11MB) signal from all over my 3-storey home, and the user interface is decent. The unit hooked up to my ISP fine and seemed to work well at first. Unfortunately the firmware locks up; every 2 days I have to unplug it for 5 seconds then plug it in again - then it has to re-log into my ISP, but then it works ok. It does run very hot, but I'm not sure if this is the root problem. Web support is very limited. From what I read on the net, the older 1.2-series firmware is more stable. Mine has the newer 1.3 series firmware, but since you can't download this from the net (as of today only the 1.2 is on the site) I am reluctant to reflash it if I can't get it back. As such, I just disabled the DHCP and wireless and use it a a 4-port hub occasionally, and reinstalled my Dlink wireless router. If you can get this cheap and they come out with more stable firmware, grab one. If not, maybe think about spending a bit more for a more stable unit, or just be fine with unplugging it every couple of days. Much of the buzz I read about this unit lauded it as having Linksys guts - if so, these are pretty sickly innards, and if I were in brand management at Linksys, I'd want to distance my trademarks from this particular box. Peace from Canada, Jan 2005

Disappointed, November 2, 2003
By unknown
Like others, I bought this router because it's cheap. I've had it for several months.Unlike others, I have met mostly with success using this router. It's been routing http, ftp, rdp, and other traffic into my home network. Outbound connections just plain work. I found the router easy to set up and wireless connections started right up. WEP works. Inbound port forwarding works. For the most part I'm happy with this router. But every few weeks, this router will simply stop routing traffic between my internal and external networks and I don't know why. It may be that it doesn't renew its DHCP lease properly; I don't know. I called technical support and was just flabbergasted by the incompetence there. Currently I must reboot my router every few weeks. It's very frustrating. I would recommend against this product overall. Spend a few more dollars and get something reliable.

Correction to previous review, October 5, 2003
By mikeycan2 (Canada)
I retract my previous review of this product or at the very least correct it. I've used this product now for several days and it's worked flawlessly. Setting up a network isn't the easiest of tasks so you should know that you need patience. There is the off chance as in my case that my ISP wasn't working so well the week I decided to up and run a network at home. Hope you have better luck but the product seems sound at least so far. For the price - it's worth it. Any problems getting it going can be blamed on not knowing exactly what you are doing. This product could use some free tech support and instructions for upgrading the firmware but hey - again for the price - I'll let that go. You should know also that the cables you use can be flaky if you use cables and make sure all computers are on when running a wizard. A bad cable connection can make everything impossible to figure out.

Hair loss inducer!, September 30, 2003
By mikeycan2 (Canada)
I've almost had the product now for about 28 days and I have to say that I've never been more frustrated in my life than after setting this one up. Yes out of the box and the first day - your network will hum and you'll be so glad you bought this product but then the future comes and like others who have written reviews - you'll wonder - where did my network go? Is my ISP down? Did I accidentally change a setting? How come I can't see my other computers - where's the net? From what I've read online - there sure seems to be some stability issues with this one. I'm about to try to upgrade the firmware which I think is a must but I don't hold out much hope. I think I'm wearing out the reset button and the power connector on both the router and my modem, not to mention the myriad of reboots I've done on my computers. Companies with bad products should just cut their losses early and either not put out the product if it's flaky or simply get on it and really support the thing on their website and if it's an update on the firmware it needs - make that known FRONT AND CENTER on the hompage of the product or just stop selling it. Address the issues dead on and let the customer know that there are issues that are being addressed and if still not happy, they can exchange the product towards a better one. Bait and switch? Ideal world? Maybe, but at least I don't feel like I'm being laughed at by a big company for believing in their product. I can see that this product will be going back to the store unless a miracle happens in the next 24 hours.

worthless paperweight., September 23, 2003
By Akilan (Dallas, TX USA)
i have spent probably 3-4 hours with customer support who are useless. i am finally getting an rma to send it back, but from what i have read elsewhere, i shouldn't get my hopes up too much - it probably won't work either. this is one of the cheapest routers out there - you get what you pay for - a lousy product and miserable customer support to match!

A waste of time, money and a fire hazard, September 8, 2003
By unknown
This router was the worst thing i've ever seen...honestly making my own router would have been lest frustrating then dealing with the problems this one gave. The network fell every 15-20 minutes and the router over heated so much it almost burnt me. I used an outdoor thermometor to take it's temperature and it was 55 degrees celcius and over!if you want a good router, just pay a little more money and get the Microsoft MN-500. DON'T waste your time on this garabage.

Tin cans and string..., July 30, 2003
By Sythe (Canada)
Got this unit with a matching PCMCIA card. Out of the box it set up easily enough...untill you actually try to use it. Much like the other reviewers I have had untold problems with stability while connected to a high speed cable modem. Both wired and wireless cannections drop out regularly. At times it will remain functional for days, and at others it will crash and require resetting every few minutes. I can't find any external sources for the problems and have it connected to a UPS to prevent power from being an issue. Don't try to save the few dollars, get a real Linksys WiFi router. This one has, it seems, inherant problems and has not had a firmware update since June 2002. I am sure a better supported firmware would fix this product...but why bother untill then?

Tin cans and string would be better..., July 30, 2003
By Sythe (Canada)
What can I say? It does not work reliably for any period of time. Crashes occur regularly and require constant resetting. Don't waste your time (or money) unless a newer Firmware is released that corrects the problem.

Somewhat Flakey, July 22, 2003
By Grampa (Columbia, MD United States)
My Network Anywhere Wireless Cable/DSL Router was a good bargain at Radio Shack, and I would be happy, I think, if I was just browsing the web, but I have to get into my home network from outside and the router makes this difficult for these reasons:*It doesn't seem to renew the DHCP lease at my ISP. After 4 days I have to renew it by hand. *If the lease expires while I am away, the home network becomes unreachable. *If I stay off line long enough, the ISP gives my IP address to someone else and I get a different one. Then I get to do lots of DNS work so my mail server is visible *This is a pain Other than this, I like it OK. It worries me how hot it gets, but that may just be the way it is. Alan

Positively Disappointed, July 6, 2003
By Chris Coulson (Hernando, FL USA)
I bought this Wireless router from Radio Shack for $$. I brought it home about a month ago, and I have been having CONSTANT problems. I have to continuously reset the router, which is highly inconvienient, considering I must place it SO high up in the air for my wireless network card to even detect it. Getting ON the internet is a whole nother dilema. It takes me about an hour everytime I want to connect to the internet on my wireless computer, because it supposedly detects it, but I have no signal. On my wired computer, the internet is slower than my grandma, and sometimes, I dont even GET the internet and must continuously reset it. I am extremely disappointed, because my parents had bought this horrible piece of junk, and not given me the reciept. So, now I must settle for 60% of what I paid for it. EXTREMELY disappointed. Do not buy this, if you don't plan on wasting your precious time and money, even getting it to work.

3 strikes - NWR04B is OUT!, April 18, 2003

After replacing 2 of these under warranty, the 3rd unit needs to be unplugged and reset every few hours. Not reliable hardware.

Works, eventually, April 13, 2003
By Doug Scott (Toronto, Canada)
Purchased the NWR04B in addition to a couple of the wireless USB cards from Network Everywhere for a small home net. USB installed no problem (other than requiring a reboot under XP), and the router was simple to setup (almost exactly like a Linksys router config). Router worked for about 5 minutes then locked up. Rebooted the router and it worked again for 5 minutes. Tried to open the manual that is only on the CD, and it said I needed Acrobat. I tried to install the copy that came on that cd, it was corrupt. I could not stay online long enough to download Acrobat from Adobe in one shot. Finally got it downloaded and opened the manual. No usable info in there about why it would lock up. Went to NetworkEverywhere website, and eventually found an udated firmware for the router. No instructions with it. Note that I had to reboot the router every 5 minutes during all this. Could not find any mention, anywhere of how to load the firmware, TFTP did not work. Finally found under the web based help in the router itself the option to upgrade the firmware. So after 4 hours, it seems to work. In the end, did not save any money by buying this thing, 4 hours of time is more than the cost of a Orinoco RG1000. And it sets up in minutes.

Seemed like a great deal - until the hardware failed, April 11, 2003
By engineerincalifornia (Thousand Oaks, CA USA)
I was excited to get this product, especially with the rebate. It installed easily, and worked, for about 12 hours. I called tech support and we determined my router was dead. The router could not be accessed using the web interface. It was very hard to get an RMA because these are new, and they are not set up for returns. It took more than 6 phone calls. My replacementunit worked well, (the hardwired links only, the wireless had issues, even with a wireless cardbus card by the same manufacturer) The new router died the same way the next morning. It was on a surge supressor, and everything was OK using an older non-wireless router. (I also have a NR041B) I wish I could return the router and the wireless card, but because I sent in the UPC for the rebates, I'm stuck, and will have to buy products from another company.

Great value, March 18, 2003
By esa50601 (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Rather easy to set up and it's been working flawlessly so far. I had to download a driver, but after that it went smoothly. I have it hooked up to my dell docking station, and cabel-modem. It's fully compatible with different brands of wireless cards (first hand experience).

Flawless... so far..., March 5, 2003
By Computer Programmer (Willimantic, Connecticut United States)
This router has a flawless install system, a great ease of use, and a nice amount of customizable options... (considering its price)... best of all if you actually buy if you will find out its made by Linksys... mine even had a Linksys quality sticker on it... this means good quality, good distance, good speed and great signal strength... Over all a great product.
