NO LONGER USABLE, February 3, 2004
By user (Gunter AFB, AL United States)
I just purchased this item and it arrived today (2/2/2004). I called in to activate, and according to the operator (omnisky no longer exists, it's now Earthlink which should have told me it wasn't worth the hassle to begin with) no one supports the omnisky wireless modem any longer. Just a warning to those who purchase this item... think you're getting a hot deal?? nah... just a useless paperweight worth 80 bucks...

OmniSky in Denver, November 13, 2001
By user (Parker, CO United States)
I have found the coverage in the Denver area excellent! Installation was a pain ... because the included CD was for the wrong device. Since I received it late on Friday (and tech support closes at 1800 ET) I had to root around the OmniSky web site looking for information on how to activate the unit. I found it, and it activated so no harm done. Documentation could be better!!!!The big problem is that it crashes the visor every now and again. When this happens, you just have to do a soft reset. Okay so that's a pain. No hard resets yet. OmniSky says it's working on a color version to be released in January 2002. Until then, the OmniSky browser is B&W. If you need color, use the Handspring Blazer browser. All in all, I like the modem. It does have a few problems, but I'm hoping most will be fixed in upcoming software updates. Really, the only big problem is the resets. If you're a gadget person like I am, you'll love it.

This Dog Don't Hunt, October 14, 2001
By user (Cincinnati, Ohio USA)
This product is virtually worthless for the serious road warrior. The network is thin and doesn't even work in some major hub airports. Even if you find a city where the network is viable, you most certainly must stand in front of a window, or go outside to connect. I travel half of each week and quickly found that the purchase of this product, and worse, the pre-paid year of Omnisky service was a huge mistake. After a few months of use, the minstrel now sits unused in my closet. I still use my Visor as my primary PDA, but I recently purchased a discounted Palm VIIx, which I carry to get wireless email. One guy at Omnisky reminded me that the Omnisky network is faster than palm.net...I told him that anything that works (palm.net) is faster than something that doesn't. Save your money on this dog.

It depends on where you live..., August 5, 2001
By user (St. Louis/Houston)
What makes or breaks this product is completely dependant on where you live. If your locality is serviced by the correct towers with the right upgrades in place this item is a little jewel. But, if you are out of the access area, it is simply a paperweight. Omnisky asks for your zipcode in an online form it will tell you if your zip code is in the service area. In a given week I spend equal parts of my time in the Boston/Providence area for work and back home, just south of Houston. In Providence the coverage is excellent outdoors and sometimes decent indoors depending on how close to the shore you are. In Houston the coverage is incredibly strong, even indoors. A few miles down the road towards Galveston and things aren't as rock solid. So before you take in any comments from me or anyone else, realize that your satisfaction with this product will be porportional to the strength of your signal. I run an online business that requires me to answer a lot of emails, lookup online orders and forward them to my fulfilment department. I interact with my online merchant account and place orders with my wholesale accounts. I am able to do all of this with my Omnisky Minstrel S wireless modem attached to a Handspring Visor Prism. It allows me to cut and paste, access different pop mail accounts and fill out various forms -- even using secure protocol. I am able to access Fidelity brokerage and manipulate my investments, along with accessing near real time data to help me with my decisions. The battery life is pretty good, usually outlasting the Prism itself, and the supplied AC adapter is small enough to be carried along with your travel accessories for the Prism. The data rate is 19.2k and I get nice smooth transfers that is fast enough to get the job done for me. Yahoo! offers a program that allows you to chat via Yahoo! Messenger - but not the general chat program. Aol has a wireless app also, but it basically lets you IM others and use email. I am told that ICQ has a new application that will work with it also. This modem really expands your world. My wife and I have been driving around, talked about seeing a movie and were able to look up movie times at selected cinemas. The most powerfull feature is being able to access my pop3 mail accounts and send any size email (or receive) that I want. It is fast and efficient. Setup was a little difficult, but the customer service staff at Omnisky are really good and helped me through the first couple of problems. It had more to do with my unit being too far away from a good tower than anything else, but I did have a couple of other problems concerning the IP I was assigned not registering correctly. Each time it happened (all in the first three days) I was able to call customer service, they had me turn my unit off for thirty minutes then back on - and it began working with no problems. After I learned to get a backup module, all of my problems were solved. On the downside, I get an inordinate amount of faults that require me to do a soft reset. Pratically anytime that I fail to powerdown the modem before setting the device down to catch a call. Nothing is lost, and moments later I am back online, but it is a little bewildering. I should also note that I once had to perform a hard reset and lost all of my data because of a problem I had sychronizing the unit with Scout (Omnisky's online server). I lost signal in mid transfer and it corrupted an essential file. Again, having a backup module takes the fear factor out - but once you have it setup correctly and make sure that you synchronize correctly (I would simply find a good signal, then remain staitionary until complete). This is a tremendously fun tool....

Works Well With My Visor Prism, May 24, 2001
By user (Saylorsburg, PA United States)
I have used the Omnisky Minstrel S Modem with my Visor Prism for about a month now, and, I must say I am pleasantly and surprisingly satisfied with it. After a shaky start (The setup did not go well and the Handspring customer service is abysmal; but the Omnisky reps I dealt with were knowledgable and very helpful), I was able to make it perform to my liking and needs. I have used it only in the Northeast from NYC northwest to NE Pennsylvania (mostly on a bus or train), and have found the coverage to be quite good with few service interruptions.Pros: the new Blazer web browser allows you to surf the net in color, Omnisky supports all the Palm VII web clipping apps, the modem recharges easily, service in the Northeast (at least in my experience) is good. Cons: The setup can be difficult and frustrating (I had to do a hard reset and reinstall the Omnisky data as well as all my own data a few times, the modem can cause fatal errors if not shut off completely before you remove it from the visor, the Omnisky apps themselves do not support color browsing unless you use the Blazer browser for which you must now pay extra. On the whole, I recommend the modem especially for use with the Visor prism. As a former Palm VIIx user, I thought I would miss the convenience of just flipping up the antenna and being immediately connected, but browsing in color on the easy to read Visor Prism screen is a pure pleasure. The modem is very compact and is much smaller than the one for the Palm III or V. I have had no problems with it since the initial setup .

Good for some certain people, not for average people, April 25, 2001
By user (Taichung Taiwan)
Basically, I agree with what other people said. This is a very nice service, but there are several problems that I have noticed:(1) The coverage is not very good. I can not get a signal in my house, but I am able to get it outside which only 2 meters away(I am able to get a very good signal almost anywhere on my cellular phone). It seems like the signal strength is too weak to penetrate the wall. The signal is good on the several freeways in San Jose though. (2) Sometimes the speed is very slow and sometimes the connections just failed. But after couple minutes, it came back normal, a minus if you need things urgently. (3) It causes my Prism to crash many times. Even the first time when I installed the Modem, it crashed and I lost all the data. I have gotten at around 5 - 8 crashes (needs hard start) in two days. (4) The webs that you can visit (optimized for PDA) are still very limited. Overall, this thing will be nice if the aformentioned problems get improved, at this stage, it is for those serious people who need the connection on the road and need it immediately.

outstanding, March 13, 2001
By user (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
To all looking at this pruduct. It is very good. I was concerned with the other reviews. Omnisky is a reseller of ATT Wireless. The people who were unhappy do not have the ATT network. They should have Verizon. I work in this industry nationwide and coverage in NYC and Illinois can be spotty. I have had no problems with this modem I am in South Florida, which is ATT. The support is great with both Omnisky and Handspring. The Visor Platinum is faster than my Palm V. The modem and Omnisky filtering allows a much faster connection. I use another CDPD modem for my laptop and the 19.2 speed is slow. This is from the photos and ads. There is good news on the horizon though ATT is launching 128k connection over the CDPD network. This should be by the end of the year. Bottom line is if you like "toys" you will love it. If you use it for work, you will not ever be without it. Also you will be the envy of all of those traveling business people toting around a 10lb laptop. One last thing Omnisky software. Put the CD in your comp. enter your chosen user name and activation code. click add for your multiple mail accounts. You are wireless in ten minutes. Very easy.

Okay in Major Cities, March 12, 2001
By user (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
[Note: This review does not cover the question of whether or not one needs a wireless PDA.]I owned a Palm VII for about 15 months before I decided to upgrade. Or rather, needed to upgrade...2MB and wireless connectivity don't exactly go well together. It was tough decision, but with all of the rebates, I thought I'd try a Visor (Platinum) with the Omnisky modem. First thing I noticed, the VII has better penetration in buildings...at conferences and seminars, the VII worked great in just about every room I was in. The OmniSky seems to only work if I'm in a room near the outside part of the building, sitting as close as possible to the outside within the room. Second item of notice, the Omnisky software utilizes lots and lots of graphical icons and a very GUI-y email client. The VII was definitely more "content" oriented. I didn't scroll as much when reading email or news articles. And I don't know why, but articles do seem more concatenated with the Omnisky than they do with the VII. Fourth, the Palm network has better coverage than Omnisky's (see palm.net vs omnisky.com's coverage maps). Fifth, I miss just popping up the antenna and tapping to connect; it must take a good 5-10 seconds to connect with the Omnisky. So why stick with the Omnisky? I prepaid for a year (rebates). So far, I can indeed do a little bit more, such as telnetting to machines and being able to browse sites without waiting for someone to write a web clipping app. Surprise, surprise, the darn thing works in Vancouver, BC, Canada and at Whistler (yes, the ski resort)! Absolutely zero Palm.net coverage in BC, Canada. This was very handy when I wanted to do some currency conversion. Yes, my OmniSky did crash my Visor a number of times when I first got it. Then I read someone's review suggesting to close the modem apps before pulling out the module. My Visor hasn't crashed since (knock on wood ;) ). If you think you'll only be using or needing this device in major cities, it's worth considering. If you drive around a bit or tend to find yourself outside major cities, consider a Palm VIIx. Keep in mind, the VIIx is more suited to folks who prefer their wireless PDA use to be more content-oriented.

WARNING: Major Coverage Problems, March 9, 2001
By user
I purchased the Omnisky modem/service for my Visor Platinum with the hopes of checking my email during my commute on the train between downtown Chicago and the Western Suburbs. Connectivity is spotty at best. I would say I get a stable connection less than 5% of the time I attempt to connect. NOT WORTH THE MONEY OR THE TROUBLE.Their software also crashes my Visor nearly every time I use it. I will give high praise, however, to Omnisky's technical service. They are quick to respond and willing to offer multiple possible solutions. The problem is that none of the solutions seem to work. I would recommend against buying this product until they drastically improve their coverage area and fix the software.

Get used to hard restarts, February 19, 2001
By user (USA)
While I love my Visor Prism, this modem I bought with it stinks. I can only get it to work in the Wall Street area of Manhattan. I can't get a connection from my home in Brooklyn or from various areas in Queens. It didn't work when I took it on a trip to Atlanta, either. I've gotten fatal errors when removing the modem module that have caused me to lose all of my data. I've lost count of how many hard restarts I've made.I got the modem as part of a promotion, so with the promised rebates I'll ultimately only pay about $50 for it, but it's not worth the money. Find another modem -- you've been warned.

CAVEAT EMPTOR! (Latin for: "Let the Buyer Beware"), February 13, 2001
By user
Had a Palm VII and upgraded to a Handspring Visor Prism. Thought it would be great to get wireless on the Prism and tried out Omnisky. What a nightmare. The software they sent was corrupted which required hours with Tech Support and software patches to fix. Then after that problem was solved, email wouldn't work because the Omnisky email server had problems. Then the wireless coverage was *HORRIBLE!* (el stinko!). And that's here in the Bay Area where we're suppose to be the tech center of the nation. Overall, this was a real disappointment. I sent the modem back and cancelled service. Omnisky KNOW their wireless coverage is horrible and they sell you their service anyway hoping that you'll just grin and bear it. If wireless connectivity is essential, buy a Palm VII or wait until better options come out. Omnisky? That dog won't hunt.

Not ready for "prime time", February 12, 2001
By user (Columbus, NJ)
I wanted to love this product. I have a Visor Prism & thought the marriage of Palm simplicity, color, and the wireless web was going to be great. And when it all works, it's sweet. The problem is that connectivity can be spotty. But worse than that, to me, is that this device causes frequent errors & crashes. This modem drastically reduces the stability and reliability of your Visor, or at least it did for me. I got "Fatal Alerts" and other messages requiring resets all the time. Two hard resets were required. I have tried a new modem, I have tried a new Visor Prism, but the problems persist. P.S. I don't run hacks of any kind. Incidentally, I was told by multiple OmniSky tech people (who are all very nice) that the Handspring modem is the real troublemaker. Not the Visor. So maybe patches & fixes will come out in the next 6 months to make it all better. But for now, I would go with the Palm Vx and cradle, or possibly even the Palm VIIx, which I understand has more universal coverage.

A Semi Useful Toy, February 8, 2001
By user (Berlin,CT. USA)
I have been running the Minstrel S for about 2 months now and I have to say the service is great, if you can find it! When you use the Minstrel S you feel like you are a ghostbuster trying to detect ghosts, but the ghosts are the service provider signals needed to support your "new" toy!! I call it a toy still because it dosn't work more often than it does, but when you have a connection you now know you are in the new Milenium. Don't get me wrong the Minstrel S is great when it works, there are few things like it, but getting a signal is tough. You would figure that in a airport you would have service, guess again. OmniSky has to get better coverage before this toy becomes a tool!!!

Worth it, February 7, 2001
By user (Canton, MA USA)
Although this product still has bugs, I have found it really worth it. It comes with its own browser but you can download Blazers or AvantGo's browser and they work. Most everyone is used to T1 speeds so 19.2K is painfully slow but this is fastest the modem will go. All wireless modems for palm can only go 19.2K. I have had this thing crash on me but a hotsync replaces what I lost. Overall, I am happy with it although the first one I had to send back, there was a battery problem.

Wonderful Product Links You to the World !, January 6, 2001
By user (Albuquerque, NM United States)
Awesome is the word. The ability to send email and cruise the web while sitting in the airport or reclining in bed is VERY cool. Anywhere you have a signal you are on-line. I live in Albuquerque NM and coverage is good. I even use it while hiking in the Sandia Mountains here. Nothing like being on-line while hiking along at 10,000 feet up. If your area has coverage then buy it NOW !

Good product, bad CDPD coverage., December 25, 2000
By user
I bought a Handspring Visor Platinum along with this modem to allow me to access my email remotely around the city. My cell phone has NO coverage problems ANYWHERE in the area. The OmniSky service and this modem has coverage problems almost EVERYWHERE in the area. After reading many online reviews I swapped out the useless stub antenna on the modem with one that is longer, from my cell phone. This helped improve access dramatically. However, even being outdoors within 1000 feet of a cell tower (GTE is my OmniSky CDPD carrier) I had trouble. Literally, if I coughed (and my hand shook) I would lose the connection! I'm NOT kidding. When you are in a sweet spot, and it works, it works great. But the problem is that sweet spot usually entails me standing with my arm out-stretched holding my Visor up in the air like the Statue of Liberty! This is NOT a good thing. I think Omnisky (and Novatel) are on the right track, but this technology is still in its infancy. My advice, unless you need access on the road where you KNOW you will have good coverage, expect to "work" with this a bit. Technogeeks, apply, but do NOT buy this for your Mom! I must also mention, that OmniSky tech support is EXCELLENT! They answer the phone quickly and they actually know the software and hardware! I've always been happy with them, it's just the CDPD coverage that stinks. If I could rate them separately, the modem would get 4 stars and the coverage would get 1 star.

Minstrel Modem crashes your Handspring so backup everyday!, December 15, 2000
By user (work in Chicago, but live in Dallas, Tx)
First of all let me say that the Minstrel is great in that it allows you to cruise the web, get e-mail, etc. The problem I have with the modem is that it crashes your Handspring. Meaning if it can't connect sometimes it will crash and then it will reset your Palm OS except it doesn't fully reset and then starts flashing. When this happens you can't turn it off or even do a soft reset. The only thing you can do is hope you've backed it up and then do the soft reboot and when it asks you to erase all data...yep you guessed it you lose it all. Then you have to restore. So if you use the modem you better back it up daily. Another bad note about the modem, if you search certain web sites that aren't designed yet for the small interface you can sign in with your user id and password but you can't hit the enter key as it is not there. I've noticed this on several pages, brokerages and banks, credit card companies, etc. In time I assume the web pages will be updated. Such is the price you pay for new technology but I have to say I love using it with the American Airlines application which you can download of AA.com's site to check on your flight departures, etc. Overall it's as good as it gets in the wireless world I would have to say, just remember to BACKUP and BACKUP daily. By the way other than the size of the Handspring, I love it by itself, w/o the modem, it doesn't crash when you're not using the modem.

Coverage problems in Phoenix, December 5, 2000
By user (Phoenix, AZ USA)
Where this module works, it is great....too cool. But I have been working with tech support at Omnisky for 3 weeks to try to get coverage in my two prime locations in north central Phoenix. I am sending it back. Omnisky tells me they are having lots of problems with the misntrel S. I even tried two of their modums to see if it was a defect. I love it so much where it does work that I may order another in a few months to see if coverage improves. Sigh. Supposedly the coverage at the two zip codes I am having problems with is excellent. Works better outdoors, but not at all inside or outside my home.

The Best Wireless Modem Available, December 3, 2000
By user (Santa Clara, CA United States)
This is the best wireless modem available since it provides speeds that are more reliable than your standard 56K modem, and it has the most content out there. What this does is allow the user to basically search any website available. You can make travel arrangements and constantly read and reply to time sensitive e-mails. It offers all of the same qualities as the modem for the Palm Vx, but it is a little less bulky since it fits in the expansion slot for you Visor. With this great device I am able to get more work done while I am away from my computer, and it gives me the option to get things done without being confined to an office or home space.
