Worked like a charm, even on older computers, March 31, 2005
By D. Knight
I bought 2 of these, along with an SMC Barricade router/access point. I had no problem setting them up at all. I used one on a Windows 2000 laptop (an older one without network card), another on Windows XP Home. I recently moved the laptop one to an older P2 Windows 98 SE, and it recognized the network first time. The only issue I had was of my own making. I have both a home network and one using MS Groups. Still, once I figured out my problem, everything worked fine. The issue I had was strictly with directory sharing, nothing else. Highly recommend!

Fails when other wireless adapter work., January 3, 2005
By Thinking Security (Pittsburgh)
This adapter worked Ok for me under Win98. PC running 98 would stay connected while two XP PC's (Home and Pro) would frequently drop connections with SS1022. Friends brought over an iMac with a Airporte wireless adapter - it never dropped. Toshiba and Dell laptops with integrated wireless never drop. Email to support@speedstream.com (listed in their documentation) bounces. I've purchased two 50ft patch cables until I evaluate a replacement router.

This is an outstanding wireless adapter, September 30, 2004
By SF Guru (San Francisco)
I have installed and used three of these adapters on 2 desktop machines and 1 laptop, running Win98, Win2000, and WinXP. The adapter is extremely easy to install, the wireless utility is very informative and intuitive, the adapter has good range and looks good. I recommend it very highly!

Try it and you'll like it, April 3, 2004
By Peter Bakalov (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I bought my SpeedStream Wireless USB Adapter almost an year ago. I had issues about the reception, because I already tried the NETGEAR one. I had no reception with the Netgear products and when I plug the Siemens one, I was surprised. I got 60 to 66% signal against 0% by Netgear.
Bottom line is that I advice you to choose this product if you want to be most satisfied from using your internet, or network at all!

    Won't work with Windows 98SE, March 20, 2004
By ScubaSteve (Henderson, NV)
The requirements say that it will work with Windows 98SE. I tried two different computers with windows 98SE and it didn't work with either one. I spoke with the tech support and they didn't know anything about it not working with 98. They were no help. I tried it on ME and 2000Pro and it worked perfectly. Very easy to install on anything other than 98. As long as it is not on 98, it works great and I am really happy with it. The range has been great, at about 30 feet through 4 walls I get full power. Comes with a long usb to be able to place it where ever is best. Worth the money.

Make sure you install the right driver, February 10, 2004
By Yong Jin (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Make sure that you installed the right driver. updated driver is available on the website of the manufacture.

On the other hand, Windows XP has a built-in software module to control wireless device. You can choose either of them, Windows built-in software or configuration Utility provided by manufacture, but make sure which one is actived. I just want to tell you that you don't need to feel frustrated if you can't set up your device. You may block the utility that you are trying to use.

This is the most sensitive device comparing to other brands.

    Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, December 7, 2003
By the gadget maniac (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I bought this product a while ago because it was being clearanced out. I figured this much out from using it over the last 6 months: when the USB works, the adapter works great. When the USB doesn't work, I start tearing my hair out. The adapter needs to be unplugged at shutdown, or it won't work when you boot up. The best time to plug it in is after the system has finished booting, and you see the desktop, and the cursor is just an arrow. Do not unplug other USB devices, or it goes from working to "USB Device Not Recognized" or "USB Device has Malfunctioned". If I try to update driver, and point it to the driver directory, it can't find the driver in that directory. The range is also not as good as my Netgear usb adapter.

Poor compatability, unhelpful support, November 13, 2003
By Tim McNerney (San Francisco, CA USA)
I got the 1022 to connect a desktop machine to my Orinoco wireless network. It looked to be the ideal match of price and ease of use. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

The network already has several machines already on it, including several laptops with different wireless cards. But try as I might, I couldn't get the 1022 to work with the network. It saw it. It even turned "green". But I couldn't as much as ping another machine on the network, even after setting the network configuration manually. I've worked a fair amount with wireless and it just wasn't to be.

The box prominantly displays "24/7 Support". That would be their website. If you want to talk to a human, you need to call during their "12/5" window. I was basically told that once the box could see the network, their job was done. They only helped with hardware, not configuration.

So why two stars? Well, except for not working, the 1022 was easy to set up and had a well designed utility. Support, while not helpful, answered quickly, was professional and didn't waste time pretending they would help.

The Orinoco is an older base station. I do use WEP. So the setup is a bit tricky. I'm not surprised I ran into problems with non-Orinoco equipment (though my Mac works fine with it).

Would have been a nice piece if it had worked.

My router is Linksys BEFW11S4. After trying Netgear wirelss USB adapter and Microsoft wireless PC card, I bought this Siemens USB adaper. It begins to work smoothly on my Windows XP laptop right out of the box. The range is also good.

    Very Satisfied, June 29, 2003
By Y. He (TX, United States)
Installation took less than a minute(XP). As soon as it started, it picked up a signal even though I didn't have my router up yet - only one bar, but it was strong enough for me to surf the net at a very decent speed - I was eating somebody else's lunch :-).

Siemens USB Wireless Adapter works well on 2 computers, June 10, 2003
By rmorrey (San Jose, CA United States)
I needed a wireless adapter for two different computers - one new XP laptop and one PII desktop on 98SE. I tried a NetGear MA101 and spent most of a day with two professionals trying to get it to work - no luck. Then I bought the Siemens SS1022 Wireless USB Adapter and had both computers online wirelessly in less than 40 minutes with 128 bit WEP enabled. The adapter is about 30 feet and two walls away from a NetGear MR814 Access Point. The adapter comes with a nice LAN utility which shows up as an icon in the system tray when the adapter is plugged in and disappears when you unplug it. Great item and easy to set up and monitor.

The best USB Wireless Adapter, May 29, 2003

I have used several different brand Adapters, this is the best one. It has much stronger signal than PCI Wireless adapter.

I have owned this adapter for 3 months or so, and not once has it dropped its connection. Not once. I use it with a speedstream SS2624 router, about 50 feet away and through 2 walls.

Setup is easy as pie under windowsXP

Good reception, great flexibility., December 2, 2002
By Shannon D. Moore (San Antonio, Texas USA)
We purchased the SS1022 USB Adapter for the PC in our guest bedroom after failing to get a Linksys internal wireless card that would keep a signal. Despite the computer being just 1 wall (and less than 15 feet) away from our network's Wireless Access Point (WAP), the internal wireless card failed to perform. We were attracted to the SS1022 adapter because it's external and could thus be repositioned easily for better reception, unlike the internal card's tiny external antenna extending from the CPU (on the floor, beneath a wood desk).

Installation of the SS1022 went without problems, and we now have a fully Internet-ready guest room PC for visitors to check their email or play multiplayer games with us, all wirelessly!

No more wires!
