Description:
The wireless LAN solution is the easiest alternative to a traditional wired network. The SMC 2602W connects your desktop PC instantly with an existing Ethernet installation to support mobile users, temporary work sites, and other applications ranging from the classroom to the boardroom. Wireless technology provides the maximum user mobility, simple and flexible installation options, a reduced cost of ownership (no cabling costs or maintenance) and excellent scalability in supporting additional PCs. True 11 Mbps wireless is ideal for use with cable modems, DSL or SOHO applications. In the typical wireless configuration an Access Point (transceiver) connects to a wired network location via standard cabling. The Access Point supports up to 20 users located several hundred feet apart, with a maximum of 1, 500 feet. Users access the LAN via the SMC wireless adapters in their notebooks. The wireless LAN adapters interface between the client Network Operating System and airwaves via an antenna (Access Point.) Relocating or expanding the 11 Mbps wireless LAN is easily achieved by connecting additional Access Points. In evaluating a wireless LAN, it is essential to consider range and coverage, throughput, compatibility with existing LANs, cost, and scalability for future growth. Throughput is a key issue, and should be put into perspective: The typical wireless LAN runs at an average of 1.6 Mbps, thus the current standard of 2 Mbps is more than adequate for most common LAN applications. Increased user needs and more demanding new applications have created the demand for 11 Mbps wireless LAN solutions.

Read the reviews and ignore the documentation, December 16, 2001
By user (Leonia, NJ USA)
I originally rated it 5 stars with the following comments:

If you ignore the documentation and read the reviews, you'll have it up and running in 5 minutes or less. This is totally a plug & play solution. Plug your Access Point into your Router/Hub/Switch and power up the Access Point. Next plug the Wireless Card into your PCMCIA slot. Windows 95/98/etc. will prompt you for the drivers. Insert the drivers diskette (have your Windows CD handy). The system might reboot. Then you come up and you are connected to your LAN. Surf the web, send emails, knock yourself out. Great speed and range.

Now I have changed the rating to 3 stars because SMC technical support proved to be terrible. The minute I tried to configure the product I ran into problems. The provided software would not work. I tried it from four different workstations. I tried to contact SMC technical support. They never responded to three emails. Furthermore, I waited on hold for a total of over four hours on six different occations and never got to talk to a customer support representative.

I have since returned the product.

Very Easy to Install Wireless Network, October 3, 2001
By user (London, UK)
This is a great piece of product. I ran into a little trouble installing it -- because I didn't read the manual first. I plugged the power into the access point before I plugged in the ethernet cable. So the adapter did not boot properly and I couldn't figure out why the pcmia card could not access the network.

So, make sure the the access point has both the green lights flashing before trying to connect.

The only problem I had with installing the pcmia card was some conflict the other (wired) ethernet adapter. I simply removed that one, rebooted, installed the drivers and it was done.

The range is unbelievable and the speed is super. For the price, and the easy configuration, this product is hard to beat.

Took 5 minutes to install, works like a charm, September 26, 2001
By user (Los Altos Hills, CA USA)
After browsing here and reading the reviews I had decided on this package for price reasons. I just received it today, and it took me exactly 7 minutes to install it. I already had a network with a DCHP server and a hub, so I just pulled the base station from the box and plugged it into my hub. They said it was "plug and play" so I did not even install the utility software to try to do any configuration.
I then popped the card into my laptop (windows 2000 professional) and installed the drivers from the floppy.
I did not even reboot the laptop, just ran "ipconfig /renew" to get a fresh ip address from the DCHP server and voila.
I'm now on the deck, about 100ft from the base station, going through 4 walls and I'm happily on the web writing this review.
It's beautiful, it's easy, it just works.
Buy this product, you'll love it.

    Great alternative, September 21, 2001

I purchased the EZ Connect Bundle on a whim. I have a home network that works fine at 100mb/s. However, I had recently purchased a laptop. One of the things you buy a laptop for is to be mobile, on-site and off-site. My network consisted of a Linksys BEFR41 DSL Router. I connected the access point to an empty port, installed the access point access software on to a win2000 server and as soon as I started the software it searched for access points. It found the SMC access point fine. However I could not access it. I noticed that the access point default ip address was 192.168.0.254. This will not work with the Linksys that has a default ip address of 192.168.1.1, because it was outside the subnet of my network. To get this to work, I went to the Linksys Router setup in my browser and changed the default ip to 192.168.1.1. Then I could access the access point. I then changed the access point ip to 192.168.1.254. Then went back to the Linksys and changed the ip back to 192.168.1.1. (I did this because I have nodes on my network that have static ip's.) Then I was off and running. The product works great. The ip thing is not SMC's fault they could not know your specific network architecture. I am very pleased with this product.

Great product that does what it promises, August 30, 2001

Great connectivity, performance, and value.
Out of 3 products I've tried, this is best. (Linksys was too weak on signal strength, Sohoware was too entry level).
The only qualm I had was with it's wireless hub configuration utility. Utility does what it is supposed to do but I'd much rather have it working off of serial port or usb port for configuration (or somekind of internal webpage) rather than being restricted to wired network. (You can't configure it when you are on wireless notebook which kind of makes sense but simple USB or Serial connection could have saved this problem).

Stay away Windows 2000 server users, August 6, 2001

Although SMC states this product works well with all operating systems, I have attempted to install it with 3 different Win2K Server boxes to no avail. However, when hooking up to my laptops running Win98, and WinME, it runs superbly, throughout my two story home and even in the garage.

Man, I'm glad I bought this product.

From the time I opened the box, I was up and running in no more than fifteen minutes. The signal quality and strength are both outstanding. I get consistently 80-90% signal quality and strength through two walls and over fifty feet of distance. (My condo is pretty small, but the walls are almost solid concrete.)

I'm running the MAC address filtering and 128 bit encryption with no problems. As I write this review on my terrace, I couldn't be happier with my choice for wireless networking.

Tech Support ... does it exist???, August 1, 2001
By user
Have tried sereral times to reach tech support with no success. I am calling the standard tech support number at 800 SMC-4-YOU. My calls are placed at different times during the day and evening. Does SMC tech support really exist? Gee ... they were around to take my money.

Good range, simple setup., July 4, 2001
By user (Forest Hills, NY USA)
I bought this unit after returning the Linksys equivalent(WAP11 and the PCMCIA card), which was terrible.

The setup on the SMC was a snap. I have it hooked up to a Linksys Cable/DSL router and Linksys Home Phone Network, which also works great(10Mb) over regular phone lines. The range on this thing is far better than the Linksys Wireless. I have the AP setup on the third floor. In the same room I consistenly get around 95% to 100% signal strength vs. the 50% on the Linksys! I go 1 flight down through 2 or 3 walls, and my signal still is at around %70. I go another flight, another wall or 2, to the first floor and it's at 50%-60%. In the basement it finally weakens out...only able to do 2Mb...depending on whether I have a Microwave running in the kitchen it will sometimes die for a short period of time, but we are talking about several walls and 3 floors. I also took it to my backyard/frontyard...no problem...consistent 50%-60% signal. Pretty damn good...that's as good as the Linsys when it is in the same room!!! In other words, stay away from the Linksys.

The downside would be that the Card makes noises when transmitting signal in the laptop's speakers...kind of annoying but totally liveable. This did not happen with the Linksys. Other than that, no problems. It's nice to be able to take the laptop anywhere around my house and have full networking/internet access happening.

Wow, What can I say, I can't express how fantastic this kit is. A cinch to setup and install and now the freedom to be mobile. It was tough not wanting to wire my entire house with cables so I purchased this kit and I am glad I did. It arrived in 5 business days and I had it up and running in 20 minutes. Superb product and a great price. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking for a wireless solution.

    Great Product!, June 21, 2001

So, what is important in a Wireless Access Point? To me, range of operation, throughput, reliability, ease of setup, and warranty are the most important. I have to rate this product a 5 over all!

Range of Operation and Throughput
---------------------------------
Suffice it to say, this combination of Access Point and Card cover my entire house. I connect at 11Mbps most places in the house. At the furthest point from the base unit, I connect reliably at 2Mbps. Not bad, considering that is through 3 walls and a floor! I can roam anywhere browsing the web and can't notice any difference in speed (Using a 1Mbps aDSL).

Reliability
-----------
I want something I set up once and never have to touch again. I work from home, so I am on the wireless every day of the week. I need a connection I can rely on. My connection has been as reliable as a wired ethernet, with the added bonus that I can roam anywhere around the house with my laptop.

Ease of setup
-------------
This was a piece of cake! Install the card in your laptop, using the drivers provided. Install the Access Point utility on the same laptop and use it to configure the Access Point. The actual configuration uses a web browser, so it is very user friendly. Mine worked straight out of the box, but I went ahead and set up 128-bit encryption for security. That too was an exercise in simplicity.

Warranty
--------
Its warranted for a lifetime, compared to a year or two with the other products.

More Bang For Your Buck!, April 30, 2001

This unit does a more than adequate job with a roaming notebook and a couple of workstations in my house.

Very easy to use and set up. A secure unit that does 64 and 128 bit encryption. I've compared other wireless units and for the money this one is feature packed along with it's lifetime warranty. A good buy for a nice product.
