No Good, January 9, 2007
By user
I loaded the software, nothing worked. I called SMC for tech support. The person asked when I bought the product. I said I just got it. He said they didn't offer tech support any more, it was an old product. He said I could pay ten dollars and have some other company help me. I sent it back and bought a different kind.

Not worth the money, December 16, 2004
By user
This card is not very good. It has probelms picking up some wirless networks and DOES NOT HAVE WPA capabilities - the description given is not true! The software supplied in near to worthless. You may think that maybe I have a bad card but that is not the case - I bought 2 of these and they are both 'low rent' - maybe it is my computer - no again tried another card (belkin) and a centrino and a laptop with wireless included and they all worked without problems.
This is a lemon - walk on by!

Short Range and Untable, October 7, 2004
By user (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This card is easy to install. Works fine with WinXP on my Dell Inspiron 2560. However it has weaker range/reception comparing to the Belkin card I had before. It drops the connection pretty often at 50ft with one wall in between. The included software utility shown 95%~100% signal level and link quality at the time. The reading drops to 0% straight, I have hardly seen any other %number between 0% and 95%. Once in a while I lose connection in very close range of less than 10 feet! I do not think it is very reliable product.

By user (El Salvador)
ingles: It works great on linux, the wireless I bought was gray on the bottom and its chipset was not amdTek's that's found on most of the forums. I downloaded the driver from http://rt2400.sourceforge.net/ compiled and it was ready to rumble.... I luv Linux!!
espanol: funciona bien en linux, la que me mandaron tenia gris la parte de abajo y no es el chipset amdTek que se encuentra en la mayoria de foros, solo es de descargar el driver de http://rt2400.sourceforge.net/ se compila y listo

How to Set it up in compaq notebook with XP system, July 11, 2004
By user (TN,USA)
First, you should install smc utility software. The driver files locate in the smc utility dir.(for example:C:\Program Files\SMC\SMC2635W Wireless Cardbus Adapter Utility\drivers\WINXP). You need locate it to windows installer so that XP could find hardware driver.

Works well, but no WPA. Good tech support., July 9, 2004
By user (Massachusetts)
Unlike some others here and elsewhere, I've had great success with this card, which was inexpensive, easy to install, and worked fine immediately. I have a Version 2 card. However, in spite of the description here, in spite of the description on the box, and in spite of the description on the datasheet at SMC's site, this card does NOT support WPA. A driver update was supposed to have available (according to SMC literature) in Q2, 2004. But there is no such driver yet, and no one I've talked to at SMC will predict when it will be. So it this kind of security is important to you in the predictable future, choose another product. On a plus note, the telephone support from SMC has been terrific. I would deal with this company again.

Windows XP Home on a Compaq laptop, June 22, 2004
By user (Chicago, IL)
I can't get this PC Card to even be recognized as a network card on the Compaq. I tried sticking it in an old Toshiba laptop running Windows 98SE and it worked! The Compaq keeps looking for a network controller not an adapter. This may not be the fault of the card, but rather teh computer itself. Good luck if you buy one of these. Their tech support knew less than I did.

Great Product, June 4, 2004

This is a great card, absolutely no problems. I'm running XP Pro and I haven't had any of the connection problems that others have mentioned. I can surf while streaming music for hours and never get disconnected. Easy install and was running in minutes.

Disconnect also occurs with XP Home, May 26, 2004
By user (Derwood, MD United States)
Some report that XP Home does not have a disconnect problem with this card. My experience of over a year's usage is that on a Toshiba laptop (Satellite 3005) with XP Home this card disconnects every ten or so minutes, then eventually (about 30-60 seconds later) reconnects without intervention. Because of this flaw it is frustrating and annoying to use this card; I do not recommend it.

Wanted to like it...., May 6, 2004

I think SMC is dumping the pictured version of this card (the one in red and white). (...) They have now come out with version 2 of the card. Go to the SMC site, and you'll see that the card is now blue and grey.Version 1 of this card is simply not good. As the other reviewers stated, it frequently disconnects with the router under XP Pro. I've tested this on an SMC7004AWBR router. I've followed all the suggestions I received from SMC tech support. They were quite helpful, but I wound up getting a replacement for the 1st card, and now and getting the 2nd card replaced. I have a similar SMC2632 (version1) card that has absolutely none of these issues. You may have good luck if you get version 2 of the card, but if you're running XP Pro stay away from version 1!

doesn't work with all hardware/software combos, March 29, 2004
By user
I have tried this on 3 laptops (IBM T40/XP Pro, Toshiba 2805/WinME and Averatec 3150H/XP Home). Can't get it to work in the Averatec at all. Others work great. Easy install. Great range. No problems with VPN.

Works with 2000 but not XP, March 16, 2004
By user
I bought this card at overstock.com. It works with my Compaq Presario 1700 running Windows 2000 Professional, although it likes to drop the connection frequently. It fails completely with my Compaq Presario 2105 running Windows XP. The XP computer is able to connect with a Linksys card.

Problem with XP Pro, March 13, 2004
By user (Chicago, IL United States)
I guess I am not the only one that is having problem with this card on XP Pro. The connection seem to be okay but somehow it kills my office suite. I am having problem of office software crashing. Access, Excel, Word, and especially Outlook crashes after I install the driver for this card. I actually wipe off my whole hard drive and reinstall everything but as soon as I put the driver for this card on the system the office suite started crashing again. I notice that during my installation there is a pop up screen from Windows stating that the software isn't Microsoft approved therefore might cause problems with some of the software and the operating system. If anyone has any newer drivers or a solution for this please let me know. The connection for me isn't a problem and the stregth is pretty good. So I have no complain about that just crashing my office suite that is causing me a headache!

Great product for low price, February 18, 2004
By user (Port Jefferson Station, NY United States)
Very good product, although the software installation is kind of confusing because additional and unecessary feature added. The range is not great but okay. Within the range the connection is excellent and the signal will drop sharply out of certain range.

Could not get drivers installed., February 3, 2004
By user
IBM T21 w/ WIN 2000 Pro. Could not get this thing installed to save my life. SMC customer service was useless, for that matter so was IBM. Turned out the problem was a Microsoft issue [shocking I know]. After I ran windows update and installed a system patch everything installed properly. So far the card has been working fine.

Disconnects with XP pro, ok with XP home, January 5, 2004
By user (Australia)
Hello all, I have posted many comments on this card on numereous sites. The bottom line from all the frustration is that if you have windows XP pro this card will always disconnect frequently. I have 2 of these cards from different batches, both exhibit same problems with xp pro. Just check out the previous comments, they all support my theory.I tried them with XP home and viola, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, champagne was falling from the skies and the red carpet was rolling.

Frequent Disconnections Ruin a Good Product, January 3, 2004
By user (Orlando, FL United States)
This card has only one flaw with it: it loses connection very frequently, no matter what the range is. Approximately every 10-15 minutes, my connection will flicker off and on rapidly. The only way I can fix this is to go in the SMC software and hit "Apply Changes" to reset the connection properties until the connection is restored. This gets very frustrating.I am using the card in a Toshiba laptop and have tried it with both a Netgear 802.11g router as well as an SMC 802.11b router; the problem exists in both cases.

Basically Unusable, December 29, 2003
By user (Bothell, WA United States)
I used this card with a Netgear MR814 802.11b wireless router. As many other reviewers state here, connectivity is lost pretty frequently. If you are doing actual work over a VPN and are logged into several boxes, there is nothing more infuriating than having to reestablish connections everytime this ghetto card drops. I actually moved my laptop about 3ft from the router, and still observed the same behavior...range didn't seem to matter. I went out and bought a netgear card......works beautifully...my company's vpn will drop before my connection to the router...i've stayed connected literally for *days*.

No Problem for me...., December 1, 2003
By user (Maple Grove, MN United States)
Hardware: SMC7004VWBR, SMC2635W in Toshiba A15-S129. Software: XP Home, and the updated driver from SMC.Experience: During testing, I had my labtop in the same room as the router. The connection was great, no disconnections at all. It was as fast as the wired connection. I could get good connection when I am three rooms away from the router. I would get no connection if I go over 30 feet. Problems: I would either get good connection or no connection. Nothing in between. The range isn't the greatest, but then again, it was cheap. Bottomline: It is cheap, and it works.
