Bad router. Slow, unstable and extremely weak signals., January 18, 2006
By Steve Gao (Atlanta, GA USA)
Bad router. Slow, unstable and extremely weak signals. SMC had some good products, but this is definitely not one of them.

SMC2404WBR Barricade - HORRIBLE, October 14, 2005
By jimZ
Please for the love of GOD, do not buy this router! It is the worst wireless router that I have ever purchased and used. As many other reviewers have wrote, this *POS* hangs and the generated signal is undoubtedly the weakest of its class. It is unnecessary to recommend another brand because you can't get anything worse. The only good thing about this is that it still "runs" even after I threw it against the wall a couple of times out of frustration!

Terrible, slow, hangs!!, December 10, 2004
By router freak (ny, usa)
very bad hardware. After 4 weeks the router started to hang, and I had to reboot it to unlock it. Now this happens every hour, and anyway when it is working my pages take 5 second to load, slower than dial up and I am on cable. I own and have used lynksis, netgear and belkin, all of them without a problem. I bought smc because of a professional review, but this is bad equipment. Their support is terrible, if you go to their website you cannot even find new or old firmware for this model. of course they don't want to honor the warranty because "it is working". Stay away!!!!

Started off ok..., October 30, 2004
By Mark Treadwell (MD, USA)
This router worked pretty well for me for the first three or four months that I had it, but I started having connectivity problems after that. I left it with my girlfriend while I was out of the country for six months but she never really got it set up right. When I got home and set it back up, I had major wireless connectivity problems - with my laptop on my desk two feet from the router, it would take five minutes for the router to assign an IP, and then it would drop the connection. I've now replaced the Barricade with a Netgear and my only complaint after three months is that secured sites sometimes have a lot of lag, which was true with the old router anyway. I thought SMC was a reputable brand but both this product and the older version my father has have been unimpressive for wireless use. I won't be buying another SMC in the future unless it's really throwaway cheap.

Don't buy it, March 29, 2004
By click101 (EASTLAKE, OH USA)
This router has been a nightmare. It won't save the settings, disconnects frequently and just plain doesn't work like it should. Spent a half hour with tech support and he said he was going to email me new firmware...He did not. This is one of the worst products I have ever used.

Very poor range..., December 31, 2003
By unknown
Very poor range even for home networking. Got this in a bundle with SMC wireless laptop card. In the manual for the card SMC claims 1300 feet, router 1155 feet... Signal has failed after 25 feet of space with no obstructions, and 15 feet if one wall is present. For those of you who like me hope to put the router on one floor, and use your computer on another stay away from this product!!! In addition, if you choose to use encryption, your PC will freeze... The higher the level of encryption the faster it freezes.

SMC2404WBR will work with Alcatel modems, December 8, 2003
By unknown
I read some of the reviews stating that this router wont work with Alcatel modems, but i decided to buy it anyways knowing I have an Alcatel modem myself (Alcatel 1000ADSL). In the begining It didn't work, so I called tech support, they guided me through the "Advanced Process" and I was able to get my router to work with my Alcatel Modem.

Runs great, no problems here, June 18, 2003
By Truth Teller (Cranberry Twp., PA United States)
I've been running with this router for several months now (bought it from Microcenter), and I've had no problems with it. This router is on the first floor, and I have good connectivity even in the 2nd floor bedroom at the other end of the house.

Works good, sofware buggy, April 7, 2003
By Kallark (new york, ny United States)
For some reason, the software included with the router did not do anything but cause problems with my PC's (Win XP Home and Win 2000 Pro). I think it also depends on the provider (mine OptOnline). Basically in the end I just plugged everything in, and without their software it works great! Great product for a great price.

Great, March 26, 2003
By unknown
This divice is just great. I found it at ... for $... after mail in rebate. Hell cheap! It is working with my Linux server, XP, Win2k server, win 98 raptop. After you can configure the connection between router and DSL/cable, it should work with any platform that supports LAN and internet connection.

Works Great, easy to install SMC Router, March 22, 2003
By David A Coon (Alexandria section of Fairfax County, VA)
I intalled this and it worked right out of the box to my wired computer. It took a little more configuration to get my laptops working with 802.11b WIFI cards, but once I configured everything it works great. I can even use my laptop in the basement, and I have the router 2 floors above basement level on the second floor! There is little [slowness] from the distance between my basement and 2nd floor. I was having a little trouble getting the encryption to work on my wireless devices, but I think I got it working. This is tons better than the Netgear and Linksys routers that I have used in the past! It has 4 ports for wired Ethernet connections, plus their website claims it can support up to 240 some odd wireless devices. SECRET TIP: You can go to the routers IP address from a computer on your network to configure the router through a handy dandy Web-interface.

Does not work with Cox Communications Cable Internet, March 3, 2003
By unknown
After struggling for hours, and calling tech support, I took this item back to the store where I bought it. The guy at the returns desk told me that it wouldn't work with Cox Communications' Cable Internet service. Gee guys, maybe you should tell your sales people this... Other than that, it seems simple to use IF it works with your system.

Great product, easy setup, March 2, 2003
By unknown
Using a Motorola 4100 cable modem, setup was a breeze. Running both a wired and wireless network off the device. I've had zero problems so far. I have 11M NIC cards, so I have not been able to test the 22M functionality. This is a terrific product--it combines all the functionality of a router, a wireless access point, and a wireless/wired bridge all in one. My only complaint is that the rebate (thru SMC) has been a little slow to arrive.

Works great! Only User problems., February 27, 2003
By mattyk6 (Federal Way, Wa United States)
I have an Accton DSL 1000 modem (MSN DSL 100) modem connected to the WAN port on the router, hard wired(Realtec nic)/wireless connection (SMC PC card) to a laptop running Win XP Home. The DHCP server works great for XP. Just connected everything and set it up and no problems. Connected to a Desktop using a Netgear USB adapter running Win 2k Pro. For some reason DHCP would not work for Win2k Pro, could be my fault. Manually assigned an IP Address, subnet, default gateway, and Primary DNS server. Hint: in my case, I used the DSL modem IP address (192.168.1.1) for my primary DNS, secondary was left blank. Someone had mentioned having problems with the DNS settings. If you have any issues, check out ... the forums, you can find a lot of useful information.

Won't work with Alcatel Modems, February 1, 2003
By unknown
I'm glad to see that others are having the same INSANE problems trying this router to connect through the Alcatel modems on DSL connections. This router has taken years off my life.

Great Router at a Great Price, January 28, 2003
By JB (Massachusetts)
After returning a Dlink 614+ that kept dropping my connection every 30 minutes and then finally fried itself when tech support instructed me to upgrade the firmware - I bought this SMC router and a wireless card. The set-up was a piece of cake. The wireless access works flawlessly and the range within my house is far superior to the Dlink 614+. I just saved $70 and couldn't be happier.

DHCP does not return the ISP DNS servers, January 21, 2003
By unknown
The built-in DHCP server does not return the ISP DNS servers, but uses the router as the DNS server. Some programs will not work if using the router as DNS server, so you have to manually input the ISP DNS servers. It is inconvenient if you use your laptop at both work and home.My replaced D-link wired router returns the ISP DNS servers.

works fine with motorola cable modem from at&t, January 18, 2003
By teknopanda (saratoga, ca United States)
it's too bad some people are getting problems with this router with their alcatel dsl modems, but luckily it works fine with my cable modem setup from at&t. although i think the range isn't that great. can't compare with cisco.
