Got this together with the SMC7004 wireless router, and can't stress how excellent it is. Setup was very straightforward and it has worked perfectly, without even a reboot required after install (under Windows XP).

Two very minor caveats: drivers are on diskette only - if like me your laptop doesn't have a floppy, you'll need to burn a CD to transfer the files; and the driver isn't yet validated for use with WinXP but it works fine (I'm writing this on XP now).

Possibly the easiest hardware install ever, and a dream after using Intel's appalling Anypoint system.

The driver configuration was a snap......The only item to mention with win 98 installs.....Make sure that bindings are set to TCP/IP......it is not added by default....It is as simple as going into network config properties, and add protocol....and a new TCP/IP device should be added, therefore also added to the bindings.....A good device......and remember most of these cards are about the same in distance.....don't listen to the b.s from others on this.....they all operate on the 2 ghz spectrum.....at least until the higher spectrums come out......will give a higher bandwidth

Read if you using cable modem
Remember when you purchased a wireless network product - it is still a very young technology and it is not perfect. Get ready to put effort into learning basic network vocabulary - IP address, Domain name, server, Gateway etc.
Once you recieved this product and installed it you will be calling the customer support- "I gurantee It". Be prepared - make it easy on yourself and customers support guys. After what seems to be an interminal wait there is a living breathing soul on the other end of the phone. He or she will guide you through the process of intallation and set up. Take careful notes. You dont want to be wasting your time calling customer service again and again.
I use my wireless card on Sony Lap-Top down-stairs while the Network Bridge is up-stair. My house is about 3500 sq, ft,. Reception (meassured in signal strength and transfer rate shows good to excellent)is very good. You will still have problems once in a while. all you need to do is turn off your cable modem unhook your wireless bridge wait for 30 sec., turn the cable modem then network bridge and try again. This process will solve 98% of your problems once you have it set-up right.
But man what convienience. Imagine lying in your bed comfortably popped up surfing your favourite sites. Read news , mail, shop, chat and when your spouse is asleep hit the (...) sites.
I am having a great time with this device. I am not very tecnical but I am writing to encourage folks to take the wireless plunge. (...)

Great card, solid tech support, and easy installation., November 10, 2001

This networking card is simply fantastic!

USE:
This card operates at very high speeds and is surprisingly unaffected by interference. No matter how far I roam from the SMC 7004 wireless barricade (which this card communicates with) the connectivity is exceptional.

I live in a moderately large condominium that is part of a huge building with dozens of units. This building is a VERY unfriendly place for anything wireless. In fact, my cordless phones have always had some static problems. It should be noted that these are all high grade phones and I have phones for every bandwidth (analog, 900 mhz, 2.4 ghz). Despite this unfriendly environment, the card remains unaffected and works great. Also important, it does not interfear with my 2.4 gig phones.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT.
Their technical support people are friendly and knowledgable. The tollfree number is great, and their email support is good too. Sometimes the wait can be pretty long to get ahold of one of them, but it is a toll free number, and so at least it is on their dime and not yours.

INSTALLATION:
This card is very easy to install. In fact, the first time I installed it I thought something went wrong because it was so easy I didn't think anything had happened. In fact, the card was fully installed and working great.

There is one caveat though. If you install this card on your system and then upgrade to Windows XP, you could have trouble. As of now (11/9/01), if you want this card to work you will need to do a full install of XP and not just an upgrade install. Then when you install the drivers you should be fine. Frankly, I recommend this anyways, as when I did the ugrade install I had problems with several programs that disapeared when I went back and did the full installation.

Bottom line: Great card, solid customer service, and easy installation.

I am a college student and bought this card to split between the SMC Router I have for myself and the Cisco Wireless network we have on campus. This DOES NOT work with the Cisco Aironet network, I tried and tried and nothing could be done to fix this. Besides that, though, it's a great bargain of a card and worked flawlessly with the SMC router.

- Maximum range not quite as good as Airport card on Apple laptop

SMC vs Linksys vs DLink, October 21, 2001
By unknown
I own the Linksys Wireless Access Point w/4 port switch and had originally bought the Linksys Wireless card. The SMC access card had better signal quality than the Linksys and a DLink card that was tried with the identical access point placement. I will only buy SMC for all other Wireless adapter cards on our network.

I have a dual booting Compaq Presario with Win ME and Win 2000 installed. When i received the card, i installed it in my windows ME configuration and everything went smoothly, surfing the web within minutes.

Then I went on trying to intall it into Win 2000 which will not work. I tried downloading the newest software and utility to no avail. Everytime i call tech support, i wait on hold for 30 minutes and when a rep eventually picks up, they are rude, and no help. One of reps that handled my call, i could hear them munching chips down their throats and not caring of helping you. All that guy wanted me to do was to move the folder of where the downloaded drivers were (on my desktop) to the root directory and had me try reinstalling. Another rep just suggested to reinstall Win 2000, which i did many times even before calling customer rep. It is pitiful that SMC has such bad customer reps.

I have received the card for about 10 days now and still not able to get it to work in Win 2000.

I also purchased the barricade wireless router w/printer server and that have been working great with my desktop and wireless laptop using Win ME. If you plan to use it with Win 2000, don't even bother buying this card.

Works well throughout my 2 story home, October 18, 2001

This card has been plug and play. I've used it throughout my 2 story home with good results. I have the SMC7004AWBR Access Point/Router upstairs with one direct connect PC, another wireless on a SMC USB Adapter. So far this system has worked well.

Tech Support Stinks, October 14, 2001
By unknown
I had a minor problem getting my notebook configured. A half hour wait for tech support yielded an extremely rude and almost hostile agent. No help at all, I was ready to return product when I went to the website and downloaded firmware update. Now everything works great. I noticed that the signal strength drops to 40% when I am one room away, but even with low strength it works awesome! Very pleased after being disgusted by tech support. So go ahead and give it a try, but make sure you download firmware update.

Poor Signal Strength but You Get What You Pay For, October 9, 2001
By Kekin Ghelani (Atlanta, GA United States)
I use this card with the SMC router, which produces between 40% and 60% signal strength from 10 ft. away through one wall. Cupping your hand over the antenna will further diminish the signal strength to 25%. I would have to say that thest figures are poor considering the range is claimed at 150ft. I have heard that some channels work better than others, though I haven't experimented yet. Additionally, be prepared to wait for an hour to get tech support. Tech support is hit or miss. One person was really great while another got me off the phone as quickly as possible and was of no help. Too bad everyone can't be IBM. I wish IBM made these kind of products, they may not have bulletproof products but they have AWESOME tech support.

Range is terrible, October 5, 2001
By unknown
I work at a wireless company and I am constantly testing wireless PC cards out. This brand card gave the worst reception out of all! Sitting 15 ft and 1 drywall away from the access point I got 60% signal quality, when others gave 95-100%. When I surrounded the end of the card with my cupped hand, (to cause signal drop), it dropped to 20% signal quality. Other cards only dropped to 60% to 75% signal loss. I know this isn't a very technical test, but it fared worst than some of the other major brands did.

An easy wireless solution, October 1, 2001
By unknown
I've spent a lot of time dealing with 802.11 networks, and I love this card. It's basically just a matter of plugging it in, popping the driver disk in, and surfing. The range has been good (at least with the SMC broadband wireless router) and it doesn't seem fazed by the large array of other wireless junk I have in my apartment.

The only complaint I have is that it severely reduces the amount of life I get out of my battery on my laptop. Even with powersaving mode on, when I'm not plugged in I get about half the work-time I otherwise would.

    Not Recommended, October 1, 2001
By Christopher L. Scofield (Seattle, WA USA)
I have had a very negative experience with the SMC wireless products I used for my home network. I purchased the SMC7004AWBR Router, the SMC2632W network card and the SMC2662W USB network adaptor.

First the router: my intent was to couple the router to my cable modem, then wire this to an iMac. The box says it is Mac compatible, but there is absolutely no documentation on how to configure the Mac to use it. No problem, I thought, I can just download it from their site. Once downloaded, the documentation was in .doc format. Hmm - I can't read this with AppleWorks. So I downloaded it to my laptop. After about 30 minutes of struggling to get the documentation, I discovered that it offers no useful advice to Mac owners anyway. So I called customer support. After waiting for approx. 30 minutes, the support rep was nice, however, after trying several things, suggested the router was broken and I should return it. We tried several more changes and finally got it to work. It was not broken - just hard to configure.

Next the PC card. This was to be loaded into my Sony laptop. I had hoped that their documentation for PCs would more helpful. Not so. Again - off to customer service. After nearly a 30 minute wait, the rep finally got on the phone. This time, no matter what we tried, we could not get the card to work. Again he suggested it was broken and I should return it. This I have done.

Finally, the USB adaptor. No luck making it work with the laptop. And the included configuration utility would not even execute on the laptop. I thought that perhaps there was a problem with the laptop, so I tried loading this onto a Compaq desktop. The driver loaded ok, but the install program for the configuration utility failed. (Explains why it would not work on the laptop...) Again, back to the SMC website. I downloaded the configuration utility, installed it, and it seemed to work. The utility showed that I had good link quality. However, after numerous attempts to get the adaptor to reset the IP address, I gave up. I waited on customer service for 40 minutes and gave up there too. I would add that I have tried to reach customer service about 5 times, I have only successfully reached them twice.

So, in my opinion, these products have VERY poor documentation, terrible customer service, and when you do reach the rep, they are as likely as not to tell you that the product is broken.

A postscript: a suggestion from their rep. to reload the firmware on the router may have helped. Once this was done, AND we loaded the gateway and IP addresses in the laptop and PC TCP/IP settings, things starting working. I would add that their customer support reps are very nice. It is too bad it takes so long to speak with one...

Excellent Customer Service???, September 30, 2001

I purchased the wireless SMC card and and the Wireless Barricade. I installed the card on my Tecra 8100 running Windows 98. When I installed the card and configured the settings my Internet Explorer and Outlook Express crashed every time I opened them. When I took the card out, they worked fine. SMC tech support tried to walk me through the problems, and told me that he had never seen a problem like it before, and that he didn't have time to deal with my unsolvable problem. He was very rude. I called back and got a better person, who told me that they would escalate the issue and get back with me via email because they couldn't figure out the problem(haven't heard a thing after 8 days). It could be a faulty card, and I could have got one bad support person; but the experience has been frustrating and very time consuming. From the sound of the reviews, it is a fine product and support is usually great, but be weary if you install this on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 with Windows 98.

Go with USB connection, September 20, 2001
By Oddly Opinionated (Fresh, Clean-Scented New Jersey, USA)
bought the wireless network pc card, and bought the wireless USB connection, both from SMC, to work with my SMC Barricade wireless router. both the card and the USB connected unit work, but the USB unit gets better connectivity, better speed, in more places in my house. Admittedly, it's a difficult house, with very thick brick walls and steel ibeams all over the place, but the USB unit is definitely superior. Even tech support at SMC said that he'd recommend the USB in most cases, especially tough or long runs. Except, of course, then there's that wire to deal with...

The card and software took 15 min to set up and working, very easy. Once it is connected, the connection is rock solid. The data rate for surfing the web via a DSL connection is more than enough. My SMC AP is in the back of the house and I am having trouble connecting to it in the front of the house on the same floor, a little more than 50 ft away. I'd have rated it a 5-star if it could work at around 70 ft.

So Easy To Use!, September 15, 2001
By cutecube (Boston, MA United States)
I have a Thinkpad T21 Laptop (for Work) and an Apple G4 Cube (for home- can't stand looking at PC all day). I wanted to share my DSL between these 2 platforms, one wireless of couse, and cheaply. I found it in SMC! I got the SMC2632W Wireless Network PC Card and the SMC7004AWBR Wireless 4-Port Broadband Router with Print Server. They have support for the Mac OS! Hooking it up was a breeze....although I needed some help with the setup from tech support. They are there 24/7 and very courteous and helpful! Imagine that? Granted it's not a pretty design...I stashed it under the table...everything works very well.
