Only good for a single person doing a single task, April 30, 2002
By Kevin Reagan (Montrose, CO United States)
Setup took less than 5 minutes. Plugged it in, was instantly on the wireless network with my Lucent Orinoco NIC, surfed to 192.168.2.1, and followed wizard to complete setup.

BUT...It seems to only be good for one task at a time. Whether wireless, or using CAT5 to the 3 port switch on the back, if more than one person is accessing the internet at once, it gets confused and freezes the internet connection. The same is true if you only have one computer connected and are trying to perform two separate tasks at once, such as surfing and retrieving mail, or downloading and surfing. Two tasks just confuse this unit.

Tech support was good, 5 minute hold, told me try the new BIOS, then if that didn't work to return the unit.

Features are good, Firewall, IP Print Server, 3 port 10/100 switch, 802.11 Wireless, Runs ISDN, External Modem, Cable Modem, DSL and supports fail over between the 10bt and serial ports.

Overall, only good for use by one person doing one thing at a time.

    Mac OS X encryption with SMC7004AWBR, April 26, 2002
By unknown
Good piece of hardware so far. I tried the telephone support for setting up the encryption and they were fairly useless. So this is how to set up an airport enabled Mac running OS X for wireless communication with the SMC7004AWBR.
________
STEP 1

Login to Barricade (enter IP address in browser on a computer hardwired to the barricade > enter password > click "login")

>Choose "encryption"

>>Select "64-bit manually" or "128-bit manually"

>>>Enter a series of number sets in the boxes provided (letters do not appear to work)
e.g. 11 22 33 44 55

>>>Click "enter"

>>>Encryption set-up is now complete for the barricade
________
STEP 2

Open the "AirPort Setup Assistant" application.

>Choose "Set up your computer to join an existing airport network"

>When prompted to enter a password enter a "$" followed by the code you entered into the barricade.
e.g. $1122334455

>You should now be connected to the router.
___

ALTERNATIVELY, if you have already been connected to the Barricade wirelessly with no encryption then you can simply:

>pull down the apple in the top left of the screen and select "System Preferences".
>click "Network"
>Select "Show: Airport"
>Click "Airport Tab"
>Enter the "network password as "$1122334455" (or a "$" followed by whatever code you entered into the barricade"
>Click "Apply Now"

SMC7004AWBR has good features but is unreliable, April 25, 2002
By unknown
This device locks up once a day and must be reset by disconnecting the power or by using the reset feature of the SMC router web page. e-mails to SMC about this problem have not been answered. The SMC technical support telephone number reports that the wait to speak to someone will be 30 minutes. I can not recommend buying SMC products.

    Don't buy it, April 25, 2002

It works fine as a router but if you want to use it as a wireless access point, try to find something else. I was using it with a Linksys card for my laptop, and the moment the distance was greater than 10 feet, it simply stopped working.
I thought that the problem is with the Linksys card so I bought the SMC USB wireless network adaptor and again, same results.
My advice, if you want a good wireless connection avoid this product.

Out of the box and wireless in thirty minutes...., April 23, 2002

Bought a home in the total boonies of Oregon. Decided that I didn't want to drill holes and pull cables upstairs and downstairs to install my network. Lucky for me that my local ISP does have DSL here. Installed SMC network cards years ago in another life and they were bulletproof in a corporate work setting. So I choose to go with their wireless router. Was not disappointed. The manual was clear and readable and walked you through all the nuances of WINDOWS networking. The spare serial port is a great idea if your DSL link goes down. Also the printer server is useful to put the printer in a common area. It even has 128 encryption for the wireless link. As if I need it. My neighbors don't even have computers. Now I can read my email and surf the net on my laptop in the hot tub in the backyard when it doesn't rain. Right...like it doesn't rain in Oregon....

Great performer, Great support, Price increase at Amazon.com, April 19, 2002
By Mute208 (Bay Area, CA)
...The router itself works great. Range was good from all over my parents' house. Upstairs, downstairs, kitchen, my bedroom, all great signal strength. I ran around the house with my webcam connected to it, transmitting over the internet to my friends :) Remember to get a good wireless card to go with the router though. It makes a big difference. For my laptop and my parents' desktop, I went with Orinoco.

As great as the router is, I have a couple of gripes. The latest firmware for the router makes it extremely confusing to use Access Control, which was much simpler in earlier versions. Also, there is ZERO documentation on how to implement WEP(wireless encryption). I had to experiement and find out through trial and error in order to implement it, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you do. Otherwise, your neighbors might be hitching a free ride on your connection...or even worse, their kids might have some fun on your system. WEP is not the best implementation of wireless security, but for now, it's the best you've got, so use it.

To end this review, I'd like to say SMC support was great the one time I called, which was the only time I NEEDED them. My firmware update went haywire on my wired SMC7004BR router and I lost all connection to the router(oh no!). I called up their 800 number at 3AM and they told me what to do right away. I wish they would have included that information in their manual, but hey, I got my router back up, so no big complaint there.

TIP: If you mess up your router during a firmware upgrade, try this: turn off your router, short pins 3 and 8 on the serial port, then turn on your router while shorting the pins for up to 10 seconds. Assign a static IP to your PC and ping the router. That should do the trick!

Product good, but printer not supported, April 16, 2002
By M.C. Fields (Valencia, CA United States)
The unit installed with minimal pain using the instructions for Windows 2000 (my platform is XP). Too bad SMC doesn't tell you this in advance. I brought this model specifically for the printer server and was disappointed to find out that it does not support multi-function devices (such as my HP- PSC500, printer, scanner, copier). Other than that I'm happy with the performance.

works great for me, April 8, 2002

This wireless router comes in 2 different models. I got the later model. If u can set this up by yourself , then u are fine.

But if u need tech support from SMC, forget it...they are so hard to reach... I sent them an email..no response at all.

No tech support tel no in the user manual. I got the phone no from dslreports.com.

A lot of comments/reviews at dslreports.com. Check them out before buying this so that u are aware of the problems encountered by others.

I manage to get mine working using the old firmware and after resolving the duplicate IP addr problem.

Product works great, wireless connection works from 200 feet away in my neighbor's house. it's true.

Anyway, I like the product.

You may consider this abuse of this forum, but it is easier than getting help from tech support, and many of you are more knowledgeable than tech support.

I'd like to access my home pc from work via this connection - em address is amcrae1@houston.rr.com if there are any takers.

Absolute junk! Locks up. Support is a joke., April 6, 2002
By unknown
This unit is feature rich, and quite simple to setup, but it is plagued with techical problems and support is a nightmare.

The most serious issue is that if you transfer any more than a couple of Megabytes of data through it, it locks up completely. It can be reset through the web interface from the wireless, or by unpluging it, but the next time you challenge it with a floppy's worth of data....down it goes.

Secondly, if you use the WEP encryption, to encrypt your wireless traffic (which you should!), the data throughput drops as much as 75% (e.g. without encryption 8-9Mbps, with 1.5-3Mbps).

Finally, SMC's idea of a solution to the problem is to replace the new one I already own, with a factory refurbished one that HAS THE SAME PROBLEM!

In two words....run away....far away!

Easy to set up. Works great. SMC software updates are frequent and work well. Runs cool. Print spooler is a nice extra, a bit slow but it works just fine.

Highly recommmended

SMC7004AWBR Wireless 4 Port Router with Print Server, March 5, 2002

This is the product to buy if you are looking for a wireless router. This is my first attempt to setup a wireless network and I had a little difficultly with the configurations on my computer. However, SMC's tech support is very knowledgeable and walked me through all the steps. The configuration for the router was very simple and easy to use. I now have 2 computers connected through wireless network cards and one computer connected to the router. I also have a printer attached to the router and this makes things convenient when I need to print. I get very good connections throughout the house even though the router is underneath a counter top. Also, if you need tech support call about 11:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. This is the best time to get throught to customer support apporximately 5 minutes.

A Breeze with XP and ATTBI, March 2, 2002
By jimH (Dallas, TX United States)
Being a newbie to networking, I relied on the reviews by individual users and established experts. The SMC7004AWBR fit the bill for my situation: AT&T Broadband Internet and Cable modem, XP Pro Athlon system, and a Win 98 system. The setup was a breeze. Before setting up the router, I downloaded the SMC tech info for the router and AT&T ISP. Initially, I used most of the defaults. I had the XP Pro system wired and running within 20 minutes. I also updated the firmware without problems. I am using a SMC2602W Wireless PCI Adapter with the Win 98 system. Again using mainly the defaults, the 7004 worked flawlessly. With a little manipulation of the antenna, I had the Win 98 system running with a good signal (on second floor of the house). My daughter is now happily surfing the net. I highly recommend the 7004AWBR. The only downside is trying to get in touch with tech support. I wanted to confirm my setup with SMC. Each time I have called, I have been on told I would have to wait more than 30 minutes, even at 1 am. I hope I continue not to have to rely on their support.

    Great Product, March 1, 2002
By Tom Fernandes (Gloucester, MA USA)
After looking closely at both the Linksys and the SMC, I decided to go with the SMC. Biggest advantage, print server built in to the router. Lets face it, if you are building a "wireless network" then why worry if you can hardwire 3 or 4 computers to the router. Having the print server is a huge plus. The range is outstanding. In a 2400 sq. ft home, my laptop never drops below 75% signal strength, and I can easily maintain that signal out in the yard. Only tough part is installing the print server to work correctly.

    It's a great product!, February 20, 2002
By T. Kang (Campbell, CA USA)
I was very hesitant to buy this product due to many "I hate tech support" messages posted for this product. So far, I didn't have to call them for tech support so I can't tell you how bad the tech support is. However, its manaul has the absolute minimum information for installation and configure.

Anyway, I have both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. My Windows XP works great with the product. The signal strength is strong and it is so easy to setup and configure. 128-bit WEP encyption works great with my NETGEAR wireless card. And no problem connecting to my EarthLink DSL service. However, the problem is with my Macintosh (MacOS X - 10.1). It works great with WEP disable. However, with WEP enabled, my password or passphrase keep failing. It is probably my AirPort's problem. I've tried putting double quote around the ASCII passphrase, but I can't connect to it with WEP enabled. I can't find any information related to this in the SMC's support web site.

About the printer server, it is great. This is one of important reasons for choosing this product and I am glad I've chosen this product.

If you have PCs only, this is a great product for setting up wireless connection at your home as well as DHCP and printer server. However, with MacOS X, you may have to do some researching if you want secure WEP encyption.

    Awesome!, February 15, 2002
By Mike Skaggs (Loma Linda, CA United States)
I purchased this product plus the wireless SMC card for my laptop running Windows XP Professional. I was somewhat worried due to the fact that compatability with Windows XP was not heralded in SMC's literature. Apparently, there must be some hefty licencing fees because I plugged my wireless router in and my card into my laptop and it worked perfectly INSTANTLY with no set up. I have had my laptop 100 yards away and the reception is great. I could not be happier with the SMC7004AWBR...

amended review-now the print server works, February 12, 2002
By unknown
I reviewed this previously giving it three stars because I couldn't get the print server to work (the wireless router part works flawlessly for my minimal need, i.e., sharing a cable modem connection), and tech support was of no meaningful assistance. Now for some strange reason (after my 4 year old started messing with things, turning the computer and power strip on and off, on and off), the print server started working on one wired computer, so I tried it on another and then, finally, on my wireless laptop, and, voila!, they all are able to access the printer (Lexmark Z42). Each computer has a different OS (Windows98SE, ME, and 2000), yet they all work fairly well. Printing is a little slower, I've noticed, than the straight parallel port connection. I think what happened was after updating the firmware I may have failed to reset the power to the router (what my 4 year old did with his tinkering), but who knows why it started working. Certainly SMC tech support didn't.

Initially Good Range. HORRIBLE SUPPORT! Now it doesn't work, February 9, 2002
By wastefaxpro
When I first received my wireless barricade in 12/01 I was wowwed by the range and ease of initial setup. However, as I try to do more complex things such as turn on WEP security, MAC address control and opening specific ports to let outside programs reach me, things work half way or not at all. When I try to reset everything to get simple wireless connection it doesn't work. It is probably my ignorance but how will I know since I get no email response or phone response.

Can you say good product. Company unable/willing/ready to support product. I can say buy something else!!!

You'll get better support from an athletic supporter!

THINK THREE TIMES BEFORE BUYING. WAIT UNTIL USERS REPORT BETTER SUPPORT!!!

Great product, poor manuals., February 9, 2002
By Computer Geek (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This router works great on my Macintosh network. I've got all my desktop & laptop Macs surfing the web wirelessly, while they all print to my AppleTalk-based HP LaserJet. It's really a phenomenal piece of hardware.
The problem is that the manual is mediocre (at best), and there is absolutely NO Macintosh-specific information anywhere in the manual. The Macintosh information on SMC's website is very sparse as well. So it was difficult to configure this router and get it set up initially.
But once I finally got it set up (with the help of some other Mac friends [...]), and once I downloaded the firmware updater from their website... everything was just fine.

No Tech. support at all!, February 5, 2002
By mx252745 (Plano, TX United States)
No tech. support at all from SMC. I have send 3 emails to the SMC's tech. support for the last two weeks. But no answer at all. After spend almost 2 hrs listening their waiting message, I finally gave up. Sorry, no further business with SMC from me.
