    Trendnet Tew-631, August 15, 2008
By Demetrius Stelmashenko
I've read the reviews on all the current wireless routers and decided to go with the 631 since newer versions really did not offer much more of an upgrade other than looks. It comes with software cd (ignor it) and load it manually. Use the 192.168.10.1 browser address to use the router wizard. I disabled the WISH feature in advanced settings (due to drops)and otherwise had a fast install. Works well, Zero drops .Last router was Belkin pre-N ,which lasted two years than had constant drops than died. This has even better range and no problems with plaster walls and heavy electrical interferance from multipal electric wirings(house built in 1925).so with this in mind, ignor the ugly body and buy it , non of the others are perfect eather. Just don't use the cd wizard and you'll be fine.

It works as advertised. I get great reception, there are a ton of settings and features to keep you busy if you are in to that kind of thing. I picked it up for less than half of the current price, so at the current price I would probably go with a bigger name manufacturer.

This wireless router works well, and was easy to configure. Provides gaming and N broadband support. The gaming part works well for me, but all my wireless devices only use G so I can't test that. It was way cheaper than the others. I bought it as a backup for my Linksys, but now my Linksys is the backup.

    Unreliable, May 15, 2008
By Bart (Gainesville, FL)
Worked great for about a month, then started cutting out whenever I streamed video from the Internet. I would have to unplug it to reset 4 or 5 times a week. Now it doesn't work at all. I've had it for 10 months.

BIG Improvement in signal strength, April 15, 2008
By Kryler (Bay Ridge-Brooklyn, NY USA)
Very briefly, my apartment has metal studs in the walls. My laptop (Intel NIC) is two rooms from the router (D-Link) but the signal goes through the two walls at 90 degrees and I get 5 out of 5 on the meter. The problem had been my second desktop (D-Link NIC) is diagnally on the opposite side of the apartment and the signal goes through 4 walls at various extreme angles. I averaged 1 of 5 bars in that room. I installed this router and immediately got 4 out of 5 bars. WOW! Now why only 4 stars-the configuration wasn't quite as friendly at the D-Link's and my first attempt at TrendNet's tech support wasn't good. After 20 minutes on the phone, the tech (with an attitude) gave up and told me to dwnld some firmware & call back (more wait time). When I got to the firmware page, there were several options that he didn't warn me about. So I dwnld'd all of them. I called back & y'know when you get a tech that has it all together-this was that guy. First he told me to trash the firmware updates. Then in ten minutes he had me up and running. Now me happy.

Overall it is a lot better than the old Wireless-G (Linksys). Worked right off the box. Needs a little more time to enable the wep key which has not happened yet. Comes with a Netmanager software has a short trial period so plan on spending a little more if you need it.

Good Product So Far!, March 9, 2008
By Justin S
I bought this router about 3 days ago to set up our first ever wireless network at home. Setup was no more difficult than my old (wired) lynksis router, if not easier.

Take note: When setting up WEP or WPA encryption you are supposed to go to a specific address, don't enter a password when logging in because the generic ones didn't work. I spent 1/2 hour on the phone just to find out it didn't need a password.

I'm using this with the MBP internal wireless capabilities with the router at the farthest end of the house from me with full reception. IMO this is a great router for the price.

Excelente desempeno con mi MacBook 2.2 GHz (Late 2007) que usa IEEE 802.11n (draft) y MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard). Facil de configurar por medio de Safari y muy buen precio. Lo recomiendo.

Poor Quality Router, February 1, 2008
By G. Connolly (Moscow, ID)
I'm relatively experienced with installing and using wireless router technology. My roommate bought this router when we first moved into our current place. It arrived, and I installed it, making sure to update the firmware immediately after setting it up. This router has been nothing but trouble from day one, constantly cutting off Internet connections, and needing to be refreshed at least three or four times a week. My computer is set up less than thirty feet away from it, yet I cannot maintain a constant connection to the Internet for more than twenty or so minutes. I cannot recommend staying away from this more.

    Bad service, January 24, 2008
By paulza (East Haddam, CT)
A good router but not worth the frustration their technical support folks will cause you if you need help. This has got to be one of the worst tech experiences of my life and I've been in computers since before Bill Gates left school. Rude, uncaring, illiterate and unattentive about sums it up. It took 4 calls before my problem was corrected and we still don't know what caused it. That I accept. Their attitude I can't.
Although the reviews on this item were good, I personally will steer clear of all Trendnet items from now on.

    So far - excellent, January 13, 2008
By John wrote this review (Valencia, CA United States)
I have owned this several months. Before I give my review I want to give you a point of reference.

My previous router was a Linksys WRTGL which I bought because my first WRT (not GL) did not have a strong enough signal. I got the GL version because you can easily use hacked firmware to increase signal power by 100%. Still not happy with the performance I bought extended range antenna for the Linksys and finally I had good wireless performance throughout the house. After 13 months it started dying and finally worked no more. Warranty is for 12 months. Nice.

So I get the TRENDnet and the first thing I did was upgrade the firmware which I had to do three times. Upgrading firmware is always a little scary but it went down without a hitch. I couldn't find any hacked firmware so I just used the standard firware.

Without any modification the signal strength is 8-10% higher than my modified GL Linksys was! To say I am happy is a vast understatement. Other reviewers here are making my head spin with all the fancy lingo of what this router can do but here is the bottom line.

This router works great. It is very easy to set up. It has a three year warranty. SOLD!

A possible downside of this router is I have heard their tech support is not that great and the reviews I read said the automatic software setup is poor. Since I have used neither of those things I cannot comment but I felt it was something that might be important to a prospective buyer.

Great router at a great price!, January 11, 2008
By JAH (Philadelphia, PA)
Very nice product, and a great price. It's the old model, but has great security features (wpa/wpa2) as well as a host of firewall and security rules that you can configure. Somewhat wonky initial setup, but nothing that you can't get through. The speeds have been very good on both my existing "g" cards, and the trendnet "N" card that I purchased w/ the router. A good unit for the price!

Excellent performance, stability and cost/benefit ratio BUT firmware caveats, December 29, 2007
By J. Sarkar (Silicon Valley, CA, USA)
Pros: Excellent firmware and interface, excellent signal strength, excellent stability, possibly good range (haven't tested the range).

Cons: 100 Mbps switch instead of gigabit switch, color of the case? :)

In my experience of owning several routers now (Linksys, US Robotics), the software (firmware) that goes with the hardware is of equal importance. For instance, I had to run my previous US Robotics 8054 router with a DLink firmware (they have the same exact hardware and chipsets inside, just branded differently) only to achieve some level of stability with that product. The engineers behind this product seem to have done an excellent job with their (at least the latest 1.0.3.5) firmware coding, because even within extremely RF noisy silicon valley apartment I live in, the Wifi performance and stability (both in G and N modes) is nearly flawless. No drops or reboots for over 2 months of use. Given what it sells for, the cost/benefit ratio is excellent.

Update: Enabling Wireless Intelligent Stream Handling (WISH) seems to cause instability with the wireless connection. Since this is a second order problem I think I'll stick to the 631BRP by disabling WISH and hoping for a fix in later firmware.

Update: As of F/w 1.0.3.7, wireless disconnects occur because if "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" in "Advanced Settings" is on. Unfortunately, the default setting of this IS on. So in my experience, for wireless stability, this should be turned OFF by the user.

Great price....easy to setup. Great range/throughput (though that's the N spec...and not specific, so much, to TrendNet)

Works as advertised and as excpted. Tools are easy to use and support (site and phone) are excellent.

    0/5 stars - useless product, December 18, 2007
By J. VAN DER ZWAN (London)
I have set up wireless networks before, and thought this trendnet router was a bargain for what it promised. however, i have never had so much trouble setting up a network. Eventually I only got it working on one of my laptops, and their customer support tried for an hour to help me out, to no avail. I have returned it and have ordered the more expensive d-link extreme. I really do not recommend anyone purchasing this product.

Quick connect, stable transmission, October 9, 2007
By BeachBev (Space Coast FL)
After shopping several routers, I decided to take advantage of the newest release (wireless -n) and the rebate for this item. The install was quick and easy, although my XP still will not work with the WPA or WEP enabling, so I lock it to the MAC. Stable transmission at max available rate, great reception throughout my house. Worth every penny of the $50ish I paid.

    Great Router, October 2, 2007
By S. Hedenstrom (OR United States)
I chose this router because of the cnet review and the price. [...] I bought this one to replace my Dlink 624, which had to be reset everyday. It was easy to set up, found my modem right away. The security features were also easy to set up. So far it has worked flawlessly, unlike my Dlink. I have not upgraded my notebook nic, it is still running on wireless G, but I have still seen an improvement on the speed, not so much on the range. It does not feel as durable as I would like, other than that, it is great. I would highly recommend it.

Excellent wireless router, September 7, 2007
By D.S. (New England, USA)
Great range, no disconnects, fast, everything you want in a wireless router. Works much better than the Belkin Pre-N that kept losing connections every few hours. The Trendnet router is not the prettiest router around, but performs great for this price range.

Initial setup and performance great, but..., August 27, 2007
By L. Autry (St. Louis, MO)
Installed this on a Monday with little effort. Immediately updated firmware, also with no problems. Great performance until Friday night and Saturday. It could not sustain wireless connections on any of three computers using wireless in my home or the wireless print server/bridge. I attempted to go through setup again but this router could not find my Motorola cable modem (model 5101). As recommended by the setup GUI, I disconnected the cable modem for longer than 2 minutes -- still no luck. After doing this several times, the router still could not "see" the cable modem. I reconnected my Netgear WGR614 and its setup also asked me to power off my cable modem for 2 minutes. I did and it found my cable modem right away and began working. I checked all three of my computers using wireless adapters in the house and all were working fine. My Netgear wireless print server/bridge (WGPS606) worked also. This indicates that my existing hardware is not defective. I am very disappointed because the wired portion of the router really does outperform the Netgear model it is replacing. This is the only reason I got it as I am not ready to replace all the "g" adapters in my home.

Stay away from Trendnet, August 24, 2007
By DT (Houston, TX United States)
I tried this on 2 PC, and it didn't work on either one. The manual was easy to follow, but after I had done what it told me to do the device still didn't work. I called tech support (I don't believe they have 24/7 as they ads) and a lady asked me for my name and number so that they would call me back the next day. She told me she was not a tech support (so why should she take the call?), and it was late then (how a 24/7 service can have late hours, you judge it).
I came to this site to see another customer had the same problem with Trendnet tech support, so I decided to return it. Your purchased item doesn't work and you can't get tech support. What else can you do? Stay away from Trendnet.
