| Description: |
| The U.S. Robotics Wireless Access PCI Adapter gives you the flexibility to turn your desktop computer into a wireless workstation or fully take advantage of your laptop's mobility. With the PCI Adapter, you can share files, printers, even the same Internet connection with others on your network-with no strings attached. The PCI Adapter includes a removable PC card so you can use it with either your desktop or laptop computer. Simply leave the card in the adapter to install it into an available PCI slot in your desktop, or remove the card for use in your laptop's PCMCIA slot. With the freedom to connect from up to 91.5 m (300 feet) away, there's virtually no limit to the ways you can use your wireless connection. You'll no longer have to rearrange your furniture to accommodate your online connection, wait for your turn on the Internet, or waste time disconnecting and reconnecting peripherals to use with multiple machines. Peer-to-peer networking lets you swap large files in seconds and enjoy amazing head-to-head gaming action with others on your network. It's compatible with the IEEE 802.11b standard so your DSL and Cable connections will run smoothly over your wireless network at speeds up to 11 Mbps. And since you can connect up to three computers without an Access Point, it's less expensive to build than most other wireless networks. Whether you're using the PCI Adapter in your desktop or the PC Card in your laptop, Plug and Play technology makes installation easy. Plus, it's wireless, so there are no cables to connect, no holes to drill, and no wires to trip over, eliminating many of the headaches of installing your own network. |

When it works it works well., December 2, 2002
By Michael A. Kinsella (Wilsonville, Oregon USA)
I installed on an E-machines E-Tower 333 with no problems. The software utility shows monitors transmission status, channel used etc. I use this for peer-to-peer networking to one other computer in my house that also has a USR Wireless adapter. I always get the full 11 Mbytes/sec speed over a distance of about 80 feet, one computer being upstairs, and the other being in a den on the ground floor. I am able to print files, make backups (on an ORB drive) or write to a CDRW drive on the other machine no problem. We can also network in Sony PCG-R505DCP laptop with no problem - so this card works with other hardware conforming to the IEEE802.11b standard. The card worked as a PCMDIA card in a COMPAQ Armada laptop. However, we were unable to get the card to work, or even be recognised by an AMD K6-2 500 MHz machine using a Tyan 1590S motherboard. We installed a more expensive USR Wireless USB adaptor (USR 1120) to complete the network. The only other caveat is that it does not offer any encryption at all on peer-to-peer networks. So if you neighbours are close enough they can share your hard drives etc. too! Overall I am pleased with this purchase for the machines it worked with.
