Hassle Free Installation. Decent Data Transfer Rate, March 26, 2008
By AT TAJIR (California)
I've used this product over a period of about a year and a half without any problems. I used this adapter to connect to the internet using my Linksys wireless router, and have been occassionally streaming video and music to my Linksys Wireless Media Center connected to my home theatre system, without any issues.
So far, I like this adapter, as it has not given me any issues. The data transfer is pretty decent at 54mbps.

Works as advertized, good throughput, no problems..., November 6, 2006

I've had one of these installed in two different PCs for the past couple of years as secondary systems on my home network using the matching USR wireless router. Initially I was using the USR 5410 PC card in an older laptop as my primary PC but switched last spring to a new laptop with built-in 802.11g with no apparent drop in performance. Only recently I moved the backup PC to a location that required wireless (it was connected to the router via ethernet cable in the previous location) and installed this card from a 3rd PC that was on the third floor. In this new configuration the router is only about ten feet away but a floor below; I'm getting 125Mpbs pretty consistently now, much better than when it was working between three floors. So no problems in several installations but much better performance when proximate to the router (no surprise). USRs web site is OK for finding drivers/support and I've had no service issues. If you have the related USR router this is a no-brainer, but as others have suggested you won't get the same throughput with another brand of modem.

Note: WEP is available now and I've been using it on my system for a couple of years, so disregard the complaint below.

Folks .. don't buy US Robotics. They used the old tactic that their products can only work among their other products. For instance, if you have D-Link as a router and US Robotics as an adapter, you will not get the maximum advertised data speeds. Only if both are from US Robotics then you MAY get full benefits. I won't buy anything from US Robotics nor will I advise anybody to buy from them. D-Link is great.

    Hardware ... Service.... Compatibility, April 29, 2005

I used to have a very high opinion of USR products and service.
Not that I have previously needed service, but this product is one of two items that have provided a surreal experience.
On a DELL XPS , this device installs like a dream. But thats where the dream ends... nightmare, weird stuff to follow.
The Router that is directly compatible with this device, is located in another room, and has NEVER worked as a wireless broadcast unit. Support from USR is basically surreal. I explained the problems totally clearly, and nothing I wrote was ever answered... they DID write back, only the answers were for issues elsewhere ( who knows what they were doing). I have had no access to my router config on board the device, and despite saying this, they never respond. The only time the router works is if I have no internet access, then I can look at all the marvelous screens it has, and wonder what the hell to do, even though I went through all the handbooks, and doco and did everything it says; when the device has an internet link, the wireless function is dead, and only one port works.

The total Kicker is that The Wireless card in the XPS has a great connection with a store next door where it sells coffee etc, and offers free wireless. After a visit to the store, not for the specific reason of canvassing access, we were very nicely granted access to the network, since not many people use the WI-FI service yet.

After firing up the Linksys router, I discovered that the US Robotics card is backwardly compatible to a b class wireless router.
I gave the one star because of the poor service, but this card, with its booster is great.

It took between 15 and 20 emails to get the RMA details, and instructions for what they want so we can hopefully get a useful router back.
JUNE 30: to get this Excellent card to talk with a USR turkey router, get the 3COM Corp U.S. ROBOTICS 4DBI DESKTOP WIRELESS ANTENNA ( USR5480 )... without this antenna, in a house or apartment over 800 square feet, the router is useless.

I must say, though, that Linksys provides great Customer service support, and is not just 9 to 5. Since I work, I can't call them for help, which seems to be the only way with some issues with routers and wifi cards to be resolved.

Much more inclined to stay with Linksys on my next purchase.

No WPA support. Don't trust US Robotics. US Robotics is just playing the WPA-will-be-available-as-a-download-soon game.
