Motorola WA840G wireless access point, March 5, 2006
By C. J. Carter (Hilo, Hawaii United States)
The Motorola WA840G is a first-rate wireless access point, offering 54 MBps and backward compatibility with older wireless devices. I replaced an unreliable Linksys WAP11 with this unit, and I'm extremely pleased with it - I will not be going back to Linksys products again.
Setup is straightforward once you get the unit running on your network. As another reviewer has pointed out, the access point has a factory default IP address of 192.168.40.x which means that you will probably have to change this in order to access it on your own network (unless by chance your own network is also configured as 192.168.40.x). Fortunately, this task is easy with the supplied Windows CD - which guides you very easily through the process - and the supplied Ethernet crossover cable, which is required to connect the access point directly to your PC for this step.
The performance of this device is superb. A 100 meter range indoors is claimed, and I can believe it. I live in a small house, with little solid obstruction and I get 54 MBps everywhere.
The security capabilities of this device are also very good - far better (as far as I can tell) than offerings from other manufacturers such as Belkin, Linksys and D-Link. WEP is supported for compatibility, but WPA-PSK with AES is the best choice. MAC address filtering is also a feature - useful as it allows you to only allow certain machines to connect to your network, based on the individual MAC address associated with their wireless hardware.
In sum, this is a great product and one I definitely recommend. Motorola have done a great job, and I'll be choosing their products over Linksys et al from now on.

Awesome Access Point, January 31, 2006
By Movie Lover (Northwest Arkansas)
This access point is absolutely awesome. It is fast, easy to setup, and provides reliable wireless access all over my house. This was one of the first consumer-based access points out there to support MAC address filtering and TKIP encryption, both big pluses in today's environment. For custom firmware developers, the source code for the access point's operating system is avaialable under the GPL license straight from Motorola's Web site.
The only caveat I have at this time is AVOID upgrading the unit to the Motorola 6.1.4 firmware! The smallest mistake can turn this unit into an expensive brick. Sadly, I speak from experience. Motorola has said that they are currently working through issues with 6.1.4 and this access point. Luckily, Motorola has awesome 24x7 toll-free technical support, and they shipped me a new unit via 2nd day air.
Overall, 5 stars! I am definitely going to be buying more Motorola networking equipment in the future.

Superb, May 6, 2004
By unknown
Excellent product, does not drop connections ever, excellent range, simple and well designed unit. It is simply superb. Cons: Default IP is set to 192.168.40.1, so for those with 192.168.0.X networks the install is not that straightforward - simply follow the CD installation wizard which comes with this great Access Point.
