Description:
The Linksys Wireless-G Access Point with SRX is the best way to add wireless capability to your existing home or small office network.

The Linksys Wireless-G Access Point with SRX lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g), Wireless-B (802.11b), and new SRX-enhanced devices to your wired network so you can add PCs to the network without the cabling hassle. Create a "wireless bubble" in that hard-to-wire home or office space, and save the time, hassle, and expense of running cables. Plus, notebook PCs can travel around your home or office and stay connected wherever they go. The Wireless-G Access Point with SRX combines smart antenna technology with standards-based Wireless-G (802.11g) networking. By overlaying the signals of two Wireless-G compatible radios, the "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology effectively doubles the data rate. And unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 3 times farther than standard Wireless-G. And the farther away you are, the more advantage you get -- the higher data rate and reflection-friendly technology can yield up to 8 times more throughput than Wireless-G in some situations. The access point avoids interference by dynamically switching to the clearest channel available. Even your standard Wireless-G and -B equipment will work better when communicating with an SRX-enabled access point.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2) protects your data and privacy with up to 128-bit industrial-strength encryption. You can use the MAC Address filter to decide exactly who has access to your wireless network.

Wireless G Access Point review, January 13, 2007

The wireless access allows me to work downstairs in comfort. Our office is over the garage and in the winter it is colder than the rest of the house. With the wireless, I can sit in front of the fire and do my work.
I LOVE THIS THING!!!

I bought this to support just 3 users in a section of a small branch office that was too cumbersome to hardwire. Unless you want to blow your credibility as a network admin, don't put this device in your network.

It continually drops connections. I have the users trained to unplug this thing when it decides to quit working which has been at least twice a week, but now it's every day, sometimes twice. How embarrassing is that to have your users have to unplug one of you devices because Linksys didn't even have the commonsense to let you reboot it from the web interface??

I've only kept this thing around because I've been waiting for a firmware upgrade. (Current version is 1 year old at the time of writing) Can't wait any longer, I'm about to lose my job. Worst network component ever.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM !!!!!!!, August 17, 2006

Newsgroups are full of HORROR stories about this piece of junk. Cisco (Linksys) should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to ship these. Many of them don't work right out of the box, and the rest will soon fail. I think I'll stop buying Cisco products as well, hmmmm.

I can't tell you what you might want to buy, but it shouldn't be this unit. I've been unable to depend on it since the day I got it. I'm quite technical, having managed tech support geeks for several years, but this contraption has tried my patience. It worked sporadically for a few weeks, sometimes had good signal strength, but mostly a weak one. Well, okay, the PC that used wireless was in another building in our house, so I was willing to give it the benefit of my doubt. Then I brought the PC into the same room as the WAP and tried to tweak and fiddle with the settings on both WAP and PC, hoping to zip up the speed and make the connection more reliable. I couldn't even get connected at that point. Updated the firmware to the latest. Reset everything to factory defaults, then painstakingly entered the WPA2 key and the SSID, plus the admin password, and all the other things like allowed MAC addresses, etc. Okay, so now I can SEE the network on my PC but I can't connect. Then after a few more connection tries, I couldn't even see the network, nothing, nada, no dice. So I've gone downhill, from a sporadic and usually slow connection in another building ... to not even seeing the wireless network while I'm literally sitting next to the WAP. That's it, I give up. I've wasted at least 50 hours on this device, it's definitely not worth the money.

I bought this because I already own an industrial-strength firewall/router and didn't need another router. Maybe that's where I went wrong, don't you do the same thing! Stay away from this money and time waster.

    Never had a problem., February 28, 2006

Got the WAP54GX out of the box, hooked it up to my RV082, uploaded the latest firmware (ver. 1.16), manually configured it and was off and running. Works flawlessly. Up now for two months without any issues.

Also have two WRV54Gs at remote sites. Lots of people have had problems with these, but works perfectly for us with updated firmware (ver. 2.37). Have to admit the WRV54G was crap till the firmware update.

Could ver. 1.15 firmware be the issue with the WAP54GX?

I bought 2 and had the same problem., December 7, 2005

I had the same problem as Sergey, except that the connection would work for a few minutes and then would shut itself off. Very poor product, compared to the WRT54GS with the High Gain Antenna (that's what I'm going back to). Don't waste your time or money on this surprisingly crappy product (strange, because Linksys products are usually pretty good).

Extends Range Indeed, but works poorly. No replacement if unit goes bad, November 17, 2005
By Sergey (Ashburn, VA USA)
This wireless access point worked well for about 2 months, but then it started to turn itself off & on sporadically. LinkSys tech support tells me that this is a normal behavior -- the unit might work for 1 hour, and then off for the next few hours, then again, on & off. I thought they would just replace the unit (since it is under warranty), but they wouldn't... they transfer instead to their technical support in India or Philippines... & would not replace the device saying that "when it doesn't work, it is a normal behavior..."
