Stopped working after less than a year, July 23, 2008
By user (Tucson, AZ USA)
I just expect a router that works. After a year this completely stopped working.
Also, it couldn't seem to handle DNS with my cable modem. I had to set up special settings that I know are not required for this particular modem and cable connection with most routers.

ZyXel X-550 router, July 20, 2008
By user (FL)
I asked a bit more of a router...I want one that handles bandwidth and port issues for videoconference, while working with both PC and Mac. THIS ONE DOES THE JOB WITH NO PROBLEM. Support helped me with a no nonsense setup.

My box of joy, July 16, 2008
By user (Sacramento, California United States)
I bought this after reading extensive reviews of different routers and decided on this one because of a number of reviewers saying that it worked well with their Vonage device, among other glowing attributes. Well, I couldn't be happier with this router. I'm no technophile, to be sure, but I know when something is working correctly. Since installing the router 3 months ago I haven't had ANY dropped internet connections, no Vonage issues, no problems whatsoever. I haven't even once had to go through the whole disconnect/reconnect madness that I had to go through all the time with my last junkbox router. This router replaced a Netgear piece of junk that had me dreaming of putting it out in the driveway and running over it with my car (no anger-management issues here). I won't go on, just suffice it to say that this is one great wireless router. Worth every penny.

FUGETABOUT IT! IT'S GREAT. WORTH EVERY PENNY., June 10, 2008
By user (BOOKLYN, USA)
I had 2 Apple Air Port Extremes. They were both Extremely BAD! Always dropping connections. This one was less than half the price of one. It's been two weeks and no rebooting, no lost connections. Fairly easy to install. During installation, just don't try to clone Mac number. You can find the much needed MAC that number on the bottom of your external modem. That was my only problem setting this one up. Otherwise, installation was pretty painless.

Easy Setup - truly plug and play!, June 4, 2008
By user (Seattle, WA)
Setup was breeze, popped in the CD, followed setup wizard, was connected to the internet and had my Security set up in 10 min. Setup wizards are very easy to use. In addition to that I bought the PLA-401 Home Plug (Set of two); was up and running in 10 min. Everything is running much faster than my older Linksys wireless router.

Works great with our Macs, May 21, 2008
By user (Milwaukee, WI)
I've installed 2 of these in a PC network and was thrilled with them. I've now installed another at work, networking 4 Macs - 2 wired, 2 wireless. The wireless Macs are across the building, down in a basement/dungeon. Cell phones do not work down there. I thought I would have to install a booster. Don't need to... the signal strength is excellent! Plug and play. The wired Macs are OS 10.3.9. The wireless Macs are brand new Imacs running Leopard.

Got it Today, March 31, 2008
By user (Cold Spring Harbor, NY United States)
I got it today, followed the set up instructions and it works great. It works! This was a replacement for my Linksys Wireless G Router which died on me a few days ago. The ZyXel is much more easier to set up than the Linksys. The Key is also very easy reconfigure to your own setting.

works well with my Intel iMac, easy set up, March 22, 2008
By user (Massachusetts, USA)
I have an Intel iMac and had finally had enough of the spotty connection (frequent problems during online gaming, difficulties with WPA protection, reboots including hard resets needed) from my Netgear router. Read the reviews here and took the plunge. Works beautifully out of the box and the software is much better than the Netgear was. Had a WPA2 protected network and port forwarding for gaming set up in about 20 minutes. Highly recommended so far.

perfect for both iMac and Vaio, March 15, 2008
By user (Dana Point, CA)
I have an iMac for my home computer and two Vaio laptops. At first, the router worked great for the Vaio's but made my iMac run very slowly. I was worried, but my brother told me to be patient with it and my Mac would learn the thing's language. After a week or so my iMac figured it out and now the thing works just fine. I don't know much about computers so the first week, when I couldn't get websites to load on my Mac, was kind of stressful. I have cable so I am accustomed to super fast loading. Other than that, this thing is a dream. I was able to hook it up myself (did I mention that I know squat about computers) and get all three of my computers to work with the thing. It is super fast now and I never have to touch the thing. It just sits there and quietly does its job. One of the reasons I got this was so that we could watch movies from Netflix while sitting in the living room. My wife's Vaio has a large screen and we have some speakers hooked up to it. Anyway, we have watched movies using the router and there is no problem at all doing that. Our apartment is small so I really can't speak to the range of the thing, but I can say that it was easy to install and works with both Mac and PC at the same time. This was a great purchase.

Best Bang for the Buck Router, February 29, 2008
By user (Silicon Valley)
I have owned this router for about 8 months now. Past routers consisted of 3 different Netgear models and a Dlink. This router blows all of those away. It is highly configurable and the mimo gives it incredible range. I have over 4000 square feet in my house on 3 levels and it covers all of it with no problems even though the router is located in the basement. I can still get a good to excellent signal 2 floors above!! The router is also very stable and has not required any rebooting to maintain connections. I frequently access my home network remotely (VNC and Slingbox) while traveling and have never had a router related issue prevent me from doing that.
It is important to mention that this router model has been plagued with a power supply issue and mine fell victim as well. Apparently, the power supply shipped with quite a few units degrades over time and eventually cannot supply enough current to the router causing it to randomly reset. Zyxel has a web page form at http://us.zyxel.com/replacement/. Fill it out and they will send you a new power supply. Mine arrived via 2 day Fedex. No problem getting somebody at Zyxel on the phone either. Great customer service! Even with this issue I would highly recommend this router.

Broken after 18 mos, February 26, 2008
By user
This router was great while it worked: MAC address filtering, WPA encryption, good signal thoughout our house, fairly easy to configure.
As reported by many owners on New Egg's site, though, this wireless router shipped with defective power supplies. Mine was one of them. Bad capacitors that burst. Zyxel was responsive and sent the power supply without having me RMA mine back.
Nevertheless, now, after trying to configure it to work with a new DSL modem, it has frozen up. Did a firmware upgrade and now the router won't open a webpage for configuration. It won't even do a manual reset! So, my next wireless router will probably be a Linksys.

Belkin, Linksys, And Everyone Be Afraid., February 19, 2008
By user (Michigan)
I had a Belkin PRE-N with MIMO and it worked pretty good. The range was good but it kept messing the setting up for XBOX Live. My Roommate and I both have LIVE and we couldn't join each others game and the NAT settings kept getting set to Strict, even after we did portforwarding and putting one of the 360's outta the DMZ. Nothing to seemed to hold. Since we've gotten the Zyxel, it's been like a whole new LIVE. Both 360's have NAT set to Open, all the time and we're getting great connections. He's on the Wireless about 4 rooms away and I'm hardwired to it. Just perfect. For you people who are done with the hassle of Belkin or Linksys with the stupid portforwarding, get this router and be happy. There is a reason it says XBOX Live compatible right on the box.

I am having great luck and find this product very easy to use. Setup was quick and painless. I am now sharing files and folders with my entire home and when I leave I can access these on the road.
Thank you Zyxel!

When all else fails ... this is the router, January 30, 2008
By user (San Francisco, CA United States)
I never thought there would be a time in my life when I would be writing a review of a router ... but I guess that time has come. I've been through four routers in the past eight years and this one is by far the best. If you're hesitant to pay the price over lower-priced routers, don't be shy. The quality will be remembered long after the price is forgotten. I've had issues with 2.4 wireless phones, other signals, faulty DSL phone lines, etc. and this router seems to have a grip on all of those problems. On the rare occasion when a 2.4 wireless phone creates intereference, this router quickly compensates and corrects the signal, somehow. It reaches further in my house and operates consistently. Setup was easy and I have no complaints whatsoever. It's so good it may even prompt you to write a review.

Great Customer Service for New Wireless User, January 10, 2008
By user (las vegas)
I've never had a wireless network, nor a laptop. I bought an HP laptop and the Zyxel router and had no idea how to install it. I called HP customer service, who was awful with the unworkable, "automated" phone trees and their overseas language barrier. I then called Zyxel, spoke with someone in the states, and they walked me through baby step by baby step through the setup process. Ended up I had a problem with my new HP wireless card, and the Zyxel rep was more helpful than the HP rep to resolve the issue. Everything has been working like a charm for the past 2 weeks.

High Quality Router, January 6, 2008
By user (Portland, OR USA)
In the past I have always bought Netgear products for my router needs, but I have been very satisfied with the performance of this product with my MacBook Pro. I have been less satisfied with it paired with my Fujitsu laptop, but I am pretty sure the problem is with the laptop, not the router. I can connect at full strength from anywhere in my house, and have have no trouble streaming internet audio or video through it. The one thing that has not worked perfectly is trying to watch a dvd stored on my server from my laptop, but that's a lot to expect from 802.11g. All in all, a great product.

Wonderful and Reliable Wireless Router!, January 1, 2008
By user (Gainesville, GA USA)
I have used a Netgear wireless router (model WGT624 v3) and was TOTALLY disappointed with this product. It had lousy range and ALWAYS crashed on me. I had to reset this router (unplug and plug back in) MANY times - what a pain! However, after reading the review on the Zyxel X-550 router, I decided to buy it (great price too). I have been using it for at least 6 months now and NEVER had any trouble with it. A GREAT router! Plus it has a handy switch on the back to turn the wireless signal on/off if you need extra privacy when not using the router.
Also, I would HIGHLY recommend using the Network Magic software that comes with the router. This software makes setting up your wireless network - including file sharing and printer sharing - VERY EASY! This software is especially good for those (like me) that don't understand how to do all this through the complicated windows XP (or Vista)software.
Great product and great price - you won't be disappointed!
